Looking for a Jon Boat

Hey guys –

Lauren and I are looking for a basic jonboat.  Ideally we’d like a 14 foot model with a 36″ beam (which seems to be about the most common boat out there, which is convenient).  I figure we need a motor in the 8hp to 15hp range to have enough to push upstream against generation.  And we’ll need a trailer.

I am trying to find a package deal for under $1500ish.  Went to Bass Pro today to check out the boats; a new boat like I want is just $650.  The issue is the engine.  They aren’t even selling (less expensive) two strokes any more due to environmental concerns, so it’s basically Craigslist or bust.

If anyone happens to see a boat that looks workable by the side of the road, or happens to have a motor laying around that they don’t mind selling for less than it’s worth (;)), I’d appreciate the heads’ up.  

The motor is the most crucial thing.  Boats and trailers are a dime a dozen.

PS Feedback on stuff like getting an engine serviced would be welcome too.  This will be our first boat with an engine.  I have a piggybank for a driftboat but it’s going to be a couple years before it’s got enough in it to move.

Zach, there seems to be a steady flow of john boats for sale on the GON forum.

I have a 5hp Honda 4 stroke and it is great in every aspect. I strongly recommend if you stumble across a deal on one.

You will probably want a short shaft on a john boat in the river also.

It would add to the cost a bit, but if you can find a boat with a tunnel hull, you’ll likely benefit from it in skinnier water.
