It looks like I am taking the family to Disney World for a week this June. I have secured the proper permission to fish at least one day while we are there. Can anyone recommend any guides or places within a couple of hours of the Orlando area? Salt (flats) or freshwater bass are both desirable. I have never fished the salt yet, so the opportunity appeals to me. Being a salt newbie, I would need a guide who is newbie friendly. Also, I need something that I can easily do in a day.

    Shane,

Try Titusville, its about 60 miles east of Disney World.  There is a world of fishing opportunities right there on Merritt Island.  You’ve got the Mosquito Lagoon on one side and Playalinda beach on the other.  There are some pretty good “do-it-yourself” opportunities there as well.  Give the guys at The Fly Fisherman a call (321-267-0348).  They can set you up with a good guide.  I fished with Captain Nich Sassic my first time ever on the flats and he was more than patient with me.  (I was having a real rough time with the 25mph winds that day)  He even got me into more than a beginners share of reds.  Great guy.

I mention Playalinda beach because, while it’s not typically ideal for fly-fishing, it is a place you can hang with the family and fish at the same time.  At least that’s what I did the last couple times.  You never know what you’ll catch on the beach… bluefish, reds, pompano, whitefish, shark, catfish…  It can be alot of fun.

I’d be happy to share any additional info if you like.  Just let me know.

I’m obliged to reply, by way of karma.

I was there in June of ’09 for a conference and fished for half a day on some private water very near the resort.

I would not recommend trying the salt on you own the first time out.

First, my condolences on the Disney ordeal, but the kids will like it.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

Capt. Todd Fuller Orlando, FL (321)412-3438 have fished with him four times all different times of the year and conditions always put me on fish. He is knows the flats and where fish are very pleasent and helpful. Very nice, skinny flats boat poles well and keeps you in position. He also has nice website. Hope your Orlando vist is productive.
