MemberIt took 4 years and about 7 trips, but the seal has been broken!
I’m back in Pensacola for the second time this year.

MemberOne tip, supposedly sea trout like a popper/dropper combo. That’s what I was told by the guys in Louisiana and they know what they’re doing. If you find an area with a little current rip, tie on a popper and run about 3′ of line off the bend of the hook (use a clinch knot to tie it on), then put a small clouser on there. Pop the popper like normal but also use it like an indicator. Seems like it would work.
Zach
Way to get your ‘sea’ legs. Zach, the technique you mention above is also a good one for late summer smallmouth fishing.

MemberGreat job Abe! Way to go, seriously. That’s a big hurdle to get over; you’re probably going to wear them out now that you have the monkey off your back. You probably caught a sheepshead with those vertical bars.

Thanks Zach. I can honestly say that it would not have happened without your help on my casting. Both fish required casts of about 50′, dead into the wind. The whole time I was fishing yesterday I kept thinking “look at the reel spool, forward cast like a fencing thrust, tossing energy back and forth between the hands”. I was able to really reef on the double hauls and punch some line out when I wanted to.
There is a serious feeling of “monkey off the back” now.

MemberI really like this report Dood
Thanks
This kind of experimenting and learning is what makes this sport so dang grand…DIY trips that progressively lead from skunk pie to Holy Cow I Got One! are part of the fiber that knits this whole crazy quilt together.
Good one ya and I can’t wait to see what is next now that you got the monkey off yer back!
Congrats

MemberYou guys are right – that’s the first time I’ve fished the Clouser line and it will shoot like crazy through the guides with not a whole lot of effort.
I’ve been fishing the Clouser line on my 6 weight Beulah for a couple of weeks and it’s a cannon!
