Tim AngeliMemberI love using my Fishpond bag as a sling pack to carry my fly boxes and spare spools/reels, but I would really like to make the step to dSLR where I would need to protect my gear by going to a waterproof pack. I really liked the Simms Hip Pack (http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/dry_creek_chest_hip_pack.html). Looks like the other waist option now is (http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/dry_creek_flats_pack.html) or going the backpack route with (http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/dry_creek_day_pack.html).
Any thoughts on the LL Bean pack vs. the Simms? I love my Simms gear, which causes me to lean toward the Hip Pack. I’d love to know what you all think.
Thanks in advance,

Steve K.MemberI’m partial to the “roll top” design as opposed to zippers. Easier access and just as watertight in my opinion. Here’s a good selection of roll top packs. I especially like the Aquaknot:

The Itinerant AnglerThe Simms Dry Creek Roll Top might just be the best of both worlds.

MemberI had to test the bag a little more — considering I had about $2k of AV gear in it yesterday when on the stream.
I filled the bag’s compartments with toilet paper.

David AndersonMemberThanks for the test Matt – looking forward to checking out the video.
For the record, I think the only gear I would truly trust for submersion and camera gear is from Pelican, but lugging one around is a real drag unless you’re on a boat.
I was interested in the LL Bean pack for protecting gear from the rain, so it may yet fit the bill..William Joseph still have a waterproof pack coming out and that may be worth a look as well – though one wonders when it’s coming because the website has said ‘coming soon’ forever..

David AndersonMemberThanks for posting the Video & review Matt – very interesting.
I think your shower test is enough to convince me my cameras would stay dry in the rain with the pack.
Not sure what to make of the submersion test – maybe your applied more pressure holding the bag under than it would normally be subjected to ?www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberthe Lowepro dryzone gets good reviews,
On both the Lowpro Dryzone packs I’ve had the zippers would separate under any pressure.
My camera gear is heavy, so maybe I was overloading ?I wouldn’t recommend them just the same.

I emailed William Joseph about their Hydro waterproof series. It seems like it has said coming soon for years on their website. Here is the response.
“Yes it has been a very long time, we are just about finished with them so hopefully they will be available by June. Are new website will be done in February and at that time it will have more info on them.”
Thanks

Tim AngeliMemberAnyone have any idea what happened to this LL Bean waterproof sling pack? It appears to no longer be available (on-line at least). I’m assuming they discontinued it.
Also, anyone have any further info on when William Joseph is planning to release their Hydro series?
Thanks,
Tim -
