    Hey dudes –

I just wanted to point something out; it’s probably the English major in me coming out.

    Thanks for posting this.

Maybe it’s my former English background as well, but I certainly notice the confusion relating to the use of rod maker and rodmaker.

    Hey Kat –

Compound words have always been with us in English – that’s our old Anglo-Saxon roots coming out.  Personally, I like to compound words like rodmaker together.  However, I think technically, you’re supposed to use them separately as an adjective (rod) modifying a noun (maker).  This doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the stuff I mentioned in the initial post, which is a an adjective modifying another adjective modifying a noun (“fly fish fisherman”).

If someone claimed to be a cane rod rodmaker, I would probably roll my eyes, but just plain ‘rodmaker’ doesn’t bother me (or even ‘bamboo rodmaker’ or ‘cane rodmaker’ which are at least adjectives modifying a compound noun).

calling something a “fly fish website,”

One of the good website optimization strategies is to incorporate the most popular keyword phrases used by your targeted audience throughout your web page content. The more precise you are to matching the phrase exactly the better the odds on improving your natural search engine listing positions. So some will use the phrase “as is”, even if it is poor grammah.

Also, if you do keyword tracking you would be amazed at all the variations that people use when searching.

Now, wait a minute. Y’all bought that idea that American Angler uses “flys” instead of “flies”? That’s just silly.

I think Zach is misremembering. The AA style sheet calls for the use of “drys” instead of “dries” for the plural of “dry” (meaning single dry fly). Example: “I asked him if he was fishing drys or nymphs.” The reason for that is that the word “dries” is confusing in some contexts in which you’d find it in a fly-fishing magazine. Also, the word “dry” is an adjective which stands in for the noun phrase “dry fly.” We don’t have plural adjectives in English, so the y-to-ie rule wouldn’t really apply. But that’s some arcane shizz right there.

I would argue that the AA style sheet, originally written by the great Art Scheck, with only minor tweaks by me, should be the ultimate authority on fly-fishing usage.

    Ok, I may be misremembering.

Oh, and re: John’s point about keyword tracking: I do look at what search terms people use to get here and they are frequently hilarious.  ‘Itinerant’ was obviously a terrible choice for the title of a website (I wanted ‘Wandering’ but it was taken).  It does convey a certain air of sophistication, which is nice, but I’d say that’s pretty offset when a good 40% of your users search you up as follows:

    “itinerent”
    “intinerant”
    “intenerant”
    “intenerent”
    “itinirint” (my personal favorite)
    and…
    “internet”

No, this is not the Internet Angler.  🙂

When I first saw the link to this website I was wondering if somebody misspelled “Internet”.  ;D

Go to the link below and type in “Itinerant” and click get keyword ideas (Don’t see Angler with it.)

Try “dries” too. I guess our niche isn’t too popular except with us fly fishing “Internet” anglers. 🙂

    Hey John –

There is one advantage however: Google ‘itinerant.’

    Right, confession time…

I am dyslexic, on my last spelling “test / check” I got my highest marks ever, Grade 9 and a half! whats that like a 14 year old? let alone my grammah, ooohhhh that is poor.

So thanks Zach, you’ve just gone and made me even more confused.

I fish, with a fly, there for I am a Fly Fisherman??? Flyfisher Man???

I fly fish, therefore I am fly-fisherman, no fly fisher man, flyfisherman????

Oh screw it, “I can like to catch a fish with a fly fishing stick…”

    Interesting post, thanks Zach

Perfect… me too (Sorry I can’t use exclamation points anymore, per the other writing thread.)

Zach, you are numero #2 in the Google Suggest dropdown listings when you type: Itinerant. Directly below the phrase: “itinerant definition” and way ahead of “itinerant golfer”. Not sure what any of that to do with fly fishing, but it looks good.
