Pretty damn stupid.

MemberWhat is stupid is how the guys at the shop let him walk away with rods.

MemberThis isn’t the first time that this has happened in the Denver area.
Both of the shops mentioned are new or have new owners. I would be interested in seeing a picture of the [s:2yv6umaj]real[/s:2yv6umaj] reel thief.Feb 9, 2010 at 7:57 pm #41567Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerChris here you go.
I might be able to clean this up some in photoshop when I get home.

John BennettMemberHonestly I don’t know what surprises me more.
a) that someone would have the stones to do that at a number of area stores.
b) That he was able to successfuly do that at a number of stores.
It’s one thing to leave rods with a loyal patron, someone who shops there regularily, and who you know while you “get another”. I just can’t fathom leaving one with a stranger.

Matt JonesMemberWow! A sage rod! Cheap ass’s if you ask me. Not even a $500 reward from their end.

Tim AngeliMemberWow! A sage rod! Cheap ass’s if you ask me.
Whole sale on the highest end Sage is probably less than 400 bucks. Between all of the shops that got hit they should pony up a lot more than one sage rod – cheap skates.
I’m going to whole heartedly disagree. First of all, they shouldn’t have to offer anything for someone to do the right thing and turn the thief in. Second of all, the article says that the thief stole “as much as $10,000 worth of gear.” We’re not talking about millions of dollars here.

Steve K.MemberHere’s my opinion and yes….everyone has one and mine stinks too 🙂
First off, the knuckleheaded reporter states, “Long and his business partner, Andrew Huber, were robbed last week.” Robbery implies that force against a person was used to obtain the item of value. No force in this scenario. The store was not “robbed”.The salesman was duped. A theft occurred and dude will most likely be charged with Theft by Taking or Theft by Shoplifting…. not Robbery. Due to the value of the rod (over $500), this crime would be a felony offense in Georgia. Sorry to pick nits….but this error in reporting is quite common…..and possibly deliberate…to create a little more drama in the story than actually exists. I hate this new breed of news reporters. But I digress.
Secondly…..I think the reward of a fishing rod was a clever ploy by the merchant. If he had simply posted a $500 cash reward….the story probably never would have made it to the evening news. And I gotta side with Tim on this one….you shouldn’t have to pay folks to do the right thing.

Second of all, the article says that the thief stole “as much as $10,000 worth of gear.” We’re not talking about millions of dollars here. Assuming the rod they give costs them $400, as you’ve stated, that makes it worth nearly 5% of the quoted value of the stolen goods. If that $10,000 value quoted in the article is actually the MSRP value, then the shops’ loss was actually on the order of $5000, making the reward more like 10% of that value.
In my opinion, the shops’ reward of a sage rod is a pretty darn good reward for doing what should be done anyway.

I am with you on this one Tim.

The Itinerant AnglerYeah I agree entirely that the shop is being more than generous.
Feb 10, 2010 at 6:08 pm #41578
Steve K.MemberAfter all, by drumming up the story, they make it more likely that the thief will get caught.
Good point.
Being from the ATL area, I know you are familiar with the “smash and grab” burglaries of late. Seems every morning on the local news….reporters excitedly report on another “robbery” which in actuality was a burglary.
Speaking of reporters….I saw one of the Fox 5 boneheads do a story on the TSA and airport security. He held up three “ninja stars” and referred to them as “weapons of mass destruction”.
But I digress……the Sage thief should be nabbed shortly. Hopefully sufficient restitution will be part of punishment. Kudos to the fly shop for having a decent DVR and camera system……unlike most liquor stores and banks.

The Itinerant AnglerMike –
Sometimes they are rubber-banded to display rods.

noneMemberI often see rods for sale without the tube.
I wonder how is this possible?Smells fishy indeed.
