Does anyone have experience with the Ross fly rods?  I’m looking for an inexpensive way to get into some saltwater action and they seem like a decent option.  I’m specifically interested in the Essence FW 12wt.  I realize it’s not going to perform as well as the major top end rods, but it would at least get me out on the water chasing some of the saltwater species down here at a reasonable price.  I’m mainly interested in hooking into a kingfish, but will also have a chance at Trevally, Snapper, and Kahawai.

Any reviews are much appreciated.  Alternately, does anyone have experience with TFO or Echo rods in the 12wt. range?  Any recommendations among those brands (Ross vs. TFO vs. Echo)?  I realize that the best possible option would be to get out and cast each of the rods, but I have an opportunity to get a good deal without the possibility of casting them all side-by-side.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

Tim Clark Reid is in your area somewhere on the North Island. He had a big hand in getting Sage to introduce a 12 weight into the budget Flight range. He uses it all the time on kings, call him up.

Don’t know about the FW in a 12, but the FC is a really nice rod for the money. The Ross/Winston rep set up this casting demo for the guys at the shop last fall.

Another one to look at is the Crowder.
