Can someone provide me with a quick primer on the differences between shooting heads and multi tip lines like Rio’s Versitip? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages? Are they advisable/usable/practical in any line weights below a 6 wt? What recommendations would you have for a multi tip system? RIO, SA or Orvis?

I like the idea of being able to fish different depths with just one line and one reel/spool and have been thinking about getting one of the multi tip or shooting head systems, but want to make sure I understand the differences, etc… before pulling the trigger.

Shane the two are quite different.

Multi-tip lines have the front section of the head as replaceable. This means you have a loop to loop connection in the belly section of the line and essentially you change the front of the belly and the forward taper, the rest of the line remains the same. This replaceable section is usually around 15 feet long and of course they come in a wide range of densities – think various density interchangeable sink tips.

A shooting head on the other hand is around (usually) 30 feet long and is attached to a thin shooting line usually also with a loop to loop connection. You change the entire head when want to change. Of course there’s no reason that you couldn’t have a shooting head that also has a ‘versi-tip’ set-up.

Shooting heads really are for distance casting, versi-tips are for versatility with what is essentially a standard length and tapered line. You would cast them quite differently.

I use the coldwater rio versitip on my 9wt for stripers and it works fine for that but you do get hinging at the loops and they can almost “catch” when they pass through the guides while casting.

It does work great for casting from a boat short repeaded distances or swinging flies.

Out of curosity, what would you use it for on a rod under a 6wt?

Adam, I’m not planning on using a multi tip on anything below a 6wt as I didn’t think it would be practical. Just thought I would ask the question to see what others had to say about it.
