Cortland Brook rods: or Kids-specific fly rods

Anyone try these things?
Cheap enough, look nice, I wonder how they would fish in the hands of a beginner/kid.
My 8 year old fihsed with me last year quite a bit and used one of my Sage 470LLs or Scott F703, but man, we had some close calls with breakage! She will inherit these rods in time, But I am thinking of buying her her own stick.
The cortland 804/4 looks like a nice rod. It would double for me on my road bike trips.
Any rod makers make a kid-specific rod for little hands? I know there used ot be some “small grip” rods on the market.
What do your kids fish?

We had a lot of different companies send along rods and outfits for Fishy Kid and there are increasingly more options. Ross Reels/Ross Worldwide has a great looking outfit if she wants pink (not great for your bike trips. HA…). Redington, T.F.O, and S.A. all have really nice youth rods/outfits as well. I was also very impressed with the ECHO Gecko rod and will most likely purchase one for my children that I’ll use in the kayak from time to time as well.
I think I was told that TFO has a new rod made for smaller hands, and beginners.
I cant wait until my kids want to throw my rods.I have cast the Cortland rods and they are great, and they look very nice too. I was impressed overall.

I just got my 10 yr old son his first fly rod (TFO NXT 5/6 wt.) for Christmas. He has started casting and loves it. It seems to be a well made rod / reel combo for the money and the no fault warranty is great for kids. We will be taking our first trip at the end of this month to Beavers Bend in Oklahoma, so it will be interseting to see how it works out on the water. I am curious to see what others think about the pink Roos combo since his younger sister now wants a rod but only in pink. As you know with daughters, its all about getting the right color.

Tim, the right color is important. I ended up with at least one non girly-girl. When I asked her if she wanted her own fly rod, her answer was “do they come in camo?”
She is as outdoorsy as an 8 year old can get. Her idea of fun is turkey hunting in the morning, lining up pop cans to shoot with a bb gun, making dirt jumps and not brushing her hair.
I have three daughters, the non oldest is in the picture above. We own a piece of property and have a decent pond chock full of pumpkinseed and largemouth. My kids are lucky enough to be “bored” fishing the pond all summer. The 8 year old can cast very well with the sage 470 or scott f703. This spring the oldest one will be doing weekenders with me all around central pa. It’s time for her first spinner fall.
There are a surprising number of very good fly rods for kids as I have come to find. Thanks guys for all your input. I’ll let you know what she gets.
