From what I’ve gathered since my arrival in NZ, there are rumors every year about the current year being a mouse year…most of those rumors are just that, rumors based only on dreams.  This year however, it looks like the rumors might actually be founded.

Are you serious or playing with my emotions? I am sure that I can get a flight out of D/FW to Auckland real quick!!

I have seen some pictures of some sickeningly huge trout caught this year. Be there in 2 weeks with a box of meece flies.

Look for anywhere the beech forest meets the water. I have a personal rule about never posting locations so the rest is up to you, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Fiordland is a good bet.

    Morsie,

Will the good fishing last well into the summer?

Tim the fish will hold their condition and will still be tuned into seeing mice even after they’ve died out or moved on. Simon actually sent me the pics so I won’t post them here but I hope he will.

Dang, now I’m seriously considering jetting to the South Island and seeing if Simon might want to go chase some fins for a couple days.  Maybe at the end of the month.  It would not be good for bank account or my work, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks for the info Morsie, it’s very much appreciated.

    Hi Tim
Sorry mate I’ve been fishing and hardly online at all.
Yep this is about as big a mouse year as we’ve had for a while.
I also think that 2 years (since TB NZ came out) must have been about right for all the troutbums to have saved up for the NZ 10 weeker! ::) 😉
Lots of young guys here catching loads of nice fish.
We’re currently getting a heap of rain but as soon as it settles, life will be good again.

So far some really decent fish have been caught and more are yet to come.
    Tim, where are you?
How much time can you get off?

Morsie, today a friend got a fish that was 24inches long and over 8lbs…..

Mate, just read your last post again.
End of this month is no good for me as I’m going to chase Kingfish off the East Coast but check your messages.

I can’t post those pics Morsie as they’re not strictly mine but I’ll stickup some pics of smaller fish that have been on the micky protein diet

I havn’t had too many days chasing the seriously big guys. A lot of them need to be chased at night and some need boat access. Anywhere where there is Beech (but not silver) and with fish 25-30 inches long will produce some stonking great fish.

The brown in the pic is not even 24 inches long and was just shy of 9lbs. The rainbow was close to 7 I suppose and looked like a rugby ball. Both taken in daylight on small nymphs. ::)
