back in August, spent a few days with a guide friend out in Deer Lodge, he works on the Rock Creek Cattle Company, one of those places where the ultra wealthy comes to play. Only because of my friend did I get to legally trespass on this place.

I had the opportunity to fish a Sweetgrass (GRAPHITE) 7’11’ #5 rod all day on their private creek, was the lightest feeling rod I ever had in my hand, more like a 2 or 3 weight.

Question, wonder who makes their blanks ? My bud that went on the trip with me came home and ordered a 9’0″ #5 for our tailwaters.

In the past Loomis made Winston and Tom M’s blanks. With the Shimano purchase I don’t know if that is still going on but I would suspect that they might be making theirs as well.

Listen to Zach’s podcast with Gary Loomis. While he did not come out and name names, I would bet that the folks at Sweetwater are getting their blanks from Gary Loomis’ new composite company instead of the Loomis of Shimano.

I know that Sam Drukman of Sweetgrass rolled all of the fiberglass rod blanks this past spring and the six weight that they sent for me to demo was very nice.

Sam designs them and they are custom rolled for them by a USA based producer, I don’t remember who they said it was when I visited the shop.

They are certainly sweet sticks.

There are a few companies out there that will make rods to specs, some of which you’ve heard of and some of which you probably haven’t.

There are some very nice Chinese blanks on the market right now. Take the “made in” off the blank and they would earn a lot of respect instantly. The cost savings would make them very lucrative to a custom builder.
