7’ 11” Bass Tournament Length?

With all the new bass fly rods on the market I am just curious if anyone knows why there is a length requirement of 7′ 11″ for Bass tournaments? What is the reasoning behind this? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.
It is my understanding that no fly tackle can be used legally in any BASS tournament, so the bass series was sort of a gimmick to sell rods. With that said, I love Sage’s line and have the lmb and smb. They are awesome sticks.
However, there are, of course, many other tournaments than BASS. I think the main intent was actually to put fly rods in those local club tournaments–not in the hands of the guys whose unis are stitched together from nothing but sponsors’ patches.
From what I can gather, they instituted the rule because of 10′ flipping rods that were being used way back when by west coast bass tournament fishermen.
Yeah, I really don’t think it has anything to do with some kind of prejudice against “flys” an fly rods and wanting to bar fly anglers 🙂
Bass T’s are all about covering water. For every cast/retreive with a fly rod, I can cover 5 to 10 times the amount of water with spnning rod. Fish all day ripping plastics through slop and your arms tired, I cant imagine T angling with an 8 wt for 3 days. My arms would fall off after 1 day. Speed of retreive? If thats what Bass are keying on and its buzz baits (or similiar)………………
If I were a T angler and my competition started showing up with a plethora of fly rods I’d smile.
At some point way back, as Shannon said, it must have been perceived that long rods enabled something organisors/sponsors didn’t want and if you don’t draw the line somewhere…where’s it end?

You’re certainly right – I was making a joke earlier and like I said, I don’t really know the rationale.

I do a lot of bass fishing and to me there is nothing better than this one for topwater.
I wouldn’t go bass fishing without a worm rod (baitcaster) though. Its just too deadly and you do not have much sensitivity to detect bites with a floating flyline and a sinking fly. I would love to hear how they fish with a line matched full sinker if anyone has tried.
I’ve been debating on the LM or the SM or the 290grain line for my 890 RPLX since they came out and will probably do one before spring.
Don’t disagree at all and I knew it was tongue in cheek :), mine was to sort of.
That said given the right conditions I can see where fur could win a tourney… By day 3 alot of bass have been stung plastics, crank baits, top water buzz and plugs..
A 5 inch bunny leech could put the winning bass in your boat
