David AndersonMemberHowdy,
Has anyone cast these two rods side by side by any chance ?
I haven’t had the opportunity yet, and was wondering how they differ.
I’m looking for a new general saltwater rod.
Cheers.

MemberHi David
Though I haven’t cast them side by side,
I think that the Xi3 has a better saltwater
application. It feels heavier than the TCX,
but it casts a wicked distance with little
effort. For me it is NOT the rod I would want
to cast all day, but when I think of chasing
goldies on the flats and longtails that dive
when you get within casting range – THIS
IS THE ROD that I want to have in my hand.
No question.Andrew

The Itinerant AnglerWith a 9 weight, you’re looking at a rod that can really go both ways: casting and fish fighting.

noneMemberNot exactly the same league, but I’ve cast the 6 weight Xi3 and to me it feels like a lifeless stick. Way too stiff overall. The TCX has that slight softer tip making it a better caster.
But if lifting is what is needed, the Xi3 would be a better choice. You might try a broomstick too. 😀

MemberI have the Xi3 9 and a TCX 10. They are both great for getting hooks into tough mouths of big fish and getting them out of tight quarters. If I had to pick one of the two I’d pick the Xi3. It just has more feel to me. If I had to pick a great casting rod it’d be something softer. Of course I’d miss a lot more fish…
As for weight after you put a saltwater reel on one of these rods I can hardly see where shaving .5 oz off the rod makes much difference.

David AndersonMemberThanks for your input guys.
Most of the limited saltwater stuff I do is off of boats and a fast long distance cast in the wind is the most common casting problem.
The TCR9 has been good for that, but can bite back a bit at the end of the day when my errr, aspirational casting starts to fade a bit.
I also need to consider freshwater cod fishing where we throw big flies short distances into fallen timber ect.My evil plan at the moment is to replace a cluster of different saltwater/ heavy rods with a matched pair of 9’s (a great all-round weight here in Oz) and work more on my casting and fish fighting skills.

The Itinerant AnglerDavid –
If you already have a TCR, and you can cast it (and it sounds like you can), then moving to any other Sage is going to be a sacrifice of casting qualities in favor of fishing fighting, or maybe just a little flexibility.

David AndersonMemberMy casting is ok, but there’s PLENTY of room for improvement.

Allan DozierMemberThis is great question, I was also wondering about the differences between the TCX and the XI3.
I plan on living forever, so far so good.
