The Zane Ti Fly Reel is on sale!
http://flydepot.com/flyfishing/hardy-limited-edition-zane-ti-fly-reel/pid–1191/
It’s marked down from $9,700 to it’s current price of $8,000 in just one year. And it’s made in Korea, ha.
At that price you could . . . 😉

MemberI like this line in the description…
The Hardy Zane titanium must be the ultimate saltwater reel on the planet.
It MUST be… Right? Because it’s $8,000? The opposite of trout bum, this reel costs 7 times what the car I have been driving for the past 4 years cost me to purchase. That is awesome, Hardy is smart, they have sold 70 of those at profit of about $7,800 each which equals $546,000. Ross would probably have to sell about 5,000 of their current top of the line reels to pull that kind of coin.
I am sure I am way off with the profit margins but man, $8,000?

MemberI added 20 of them to my shopping basket… I hope they track this kind of stuff on their site. Dang, some guy almost bought $160,000 worth of goods. What happened? He didn’t check out…
HAHA.

John BennettMemberIs it any different than the Abel Anondized reels?
That Hardy is no different. All are purely “status” symbols. The only difference is the scale. For those who have the coin with no more important priority to spend it on, the Hardy is to many, what the Abels are to many. Out of reach, pure Jonesing, status symbols. .

MemberI can’t blame them for trying to make money like that.

The Itinerant AnglerJohn –
I’m going to have to disagree with you on Abel’s reels.

John BennettMemberI was referring to the paint specifically Zach, I probably should have been clear about that. I have zero qualms about spending coin for gear of any kind, be it a well made reel, techncial clothing, lenses or bodies etc.
But I dont spend for “bling”. There are other reels out there just as well made, just as dependable, just as good for all intents and purposes without the “bling”.
Ive looked at the Abel 4wt with the Brown pattern and while I like the look, Im not paying close to $1,000 (retail in Cda) for bling. There are probably dozens of other reels for trout streams in the 3 to 50 wt range just as “good”, suitable and more practical.

I’m with Zach on this.
Yes, they are expensive, but they’re very well made and IMHO worth the money.
I remember well the first few that came into the fly shop I used to work at, they cost 4 or 5 times what a Hardy or SA reel did, but soon became very popular with the people who appreciated to build quality.
Well made reels are now more common and expensive stuff is everywhere in fly fishing, but I still think the Abel stuff stands out.
In saying that, you couldn’t give me a barf finnish one.

MemberNice paper weight or perk for a Goldman Sachs executive. I bought a Bauer Rogue last year that has the smoothest drag I’ve ever experienced. One thing for sure there a plenty of great reels for way less than 8K!

MemberHow about buy an abel and a nice saltwater rod, and use the leftover cash on airfare and hotel to go fish some place sweet? (Getting back to the original post).
