As I acquire more lines and more reels, it becomes a pain to run to the flyshop every time I need to make a switch. I have seen “Reel-E-Good” products in the catalogs, but I cannot help but think something could be made for the same price that is much faster and more efficient. How difficult would it be, and roughly what would the costs be, to rig up a simple electric motor, maybe even wire in a foot-feed?
    Thanks guys!

The up front cost and long term maintenance are a bit steep but I have found that a 5 year old is the perfect thing for the unwinding part and they can be trained for other useful tasks. Always be sure to ask if the daddy juice was dropped before it was

I picked up a large used Penn reel made for saltwater boat rods for next to nothing.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

The Angler’s Image Line Winder is far superior to the other manual ones. It’s fast and easy. It’s sold through Wapsi now.

Thanks for the input guys, but I am seeking something less labor intensive, as in put my foot on the pedal and it takes off. Basically, I am trying to get some ideas for constructing exactly what would be used in a flyshop, without giving $700 to buy one. I am thinking a motor (w/ forward and reverse), with a side-mounted wheel or spare spool, affixed to a piece of ply and a base, and a spool 12-16″ away.
    Thanks!

You can find an old sewing machine w/ foot pedal for under ~$50. Gut it and mount the internal motor on a block of wood. Jimmy up a chuck to hold plastic fly line spools and you are all set.

    Hope that helps.
