Anyone know if you can check stove fuel (propane, etc.) in checked luggage on an airline.

    Simple and short answer…No.

Luckily there’s no shortage of camp fuel (of all kinds) near your destination. Remember bug dope as they’re especially bad this year out here.

Looks like I can answer my own question; Delta doesn’t allow it.

    Hey Doug –

You beat me to it; thanks.

I’m sure there’s a shop in Jackson (or any town close by) that carries it, it’s practically the center of the backpacking universe. Not certain about the “Park Stores”. Not sure if I’ve ever seen one.

That said, a drive out to West is never a wasted trip…. 😉

If you cant find a fuel container in Jackson, you’ve got issues.

Been to Jackson many times and I would be shocked if you could not find it there.

Speaking of, anyone have any solid recipes for campfire food?

    Zach,

Go to Teton Mountaineering one block north of town square (closest to airport if heading into Jackson).  You might also try Dornan’s in Moose, WY (take a right before you cross the Snake River Bridge if you were heading into GTNP) if you’re heading on to Yellowstone.

One of the easiest campfire meals I’ve found is to throw a bunch of veggies (potatoes, green beans, onions, etc.) and meat (ground or cubed) onto aluminum foil.  Add a little water to “steam” the veggies and season to your liking.  Wrap the aluminum foil around everything, fold at the joints to “seal” them, and punch a few holes as a vent.  Stick it in the coals of the fire to cook.  Open the foil up, eat, and then discard the foil, resulting in no dishes (except utensils).

It has always turned out pretty delicious for me, and everyone can make their own so they can add whatever they like.  Did I mention no dishes?

Breakfast burittos are another one of my favorite camping meals.

    I like that idea, Tim.

You could FedEx your gear to Park’s Fly Shop in Gardner although the HazMat charge might be pretty steep for the gas.

Heed Tim’s warning….if you don’t get it in Jackson….you probably want have another chance. There is a kayak/outdoor shop in Gardner right down the street from Helen’s Corral Drive-Inn that has a few backpacking supplies. Try the Helen’s Hateful Hamburger at the Corral Drive-Inn. It’s about the size of a paper plate and would make an awesome IA food shot!

    Zach,

Breakfast burritos are definitely one of my favorite foods, and they work excellent while camping.

If you have a 2 quart pan eggs in a bag will work and you can do the boil using river water. I do them

Here’s another thing you may or may not have thought of, but flying with camping gear can be really heavy.

Anyone know if you can check stove fuel (propane, etc.) in checked luggage on an airline.  I could definitely see why they might ban this particular item, but I am going to need to get propane to Yellowstone (or get some in Jackson), somehow.

    Thanks,
    Zach

Only if your Burka covers your entire face!

You can judge a man by the size of things which annoy him.

Fuel?! They even banned bear spray in checked luggage a few years ago.

Unless you want to risk eating cold food for several days, take the extra time and go into Jackson. Teton Mountaineering is on the edge of two so yyou don’t have to get caught up in the rush. Alternately, Jack Dennis’ Fly Shop is downtown and probably has fuel as well.

And before you head north to Jellystone, stop a fish Flat Creek in the Hole for a while. Think BIG fine spotted cutthroats on hoppers…
