I’ve applied to a PhD studentship in Auckland, New Zealand, and although I’m still a long way from actually getting the position, I would like to get some information on that area.

Most of the people are nice, aside from Simon Chu and Clark Reid.

When I got to Auckland, I wanted to get out as fast as humanly possible so I didnt explore the options in the area.

    Hi Tim.
Two hours’ drive south of Auckland should put you into some good water… gets better the further south you head. Don’t think you have to go direct to Taupo either – there’s plenty of good streams/rivers/lakes in between.
Drop me an email if you get the research position (at the University of Auckland???), I’d be more than happy if you wanted to tag along fishing.
    Cheers, Hamish

    Hamish,

Thanks for the offer, I will definitely plan to take you up on that!  I just checked my email and found an offer extended to me for the position.  Looks like I’m headed to New Zealand for at least a few years…and I couldn’t possible be more excited.  The position is with the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, which is part of the University of Auckland.  I’ll plan to get in touch with you once I get down there and we can chase some fins together.

    Thanks!
    Tim

There is some great water in Hamilton also. I’ve not personally fished there, but have a friend who does regularly. I’d be happy to forward your details on to him if you like?

Also, dont forget about Wellington, some good water out there too.
North of Auckland is mainly salt water stuff if I remember correctly.

You’ll also find some more info here:

    HI Tim,

A winter trip to the Tongariro river in Turangi during the spawn run can be awesome.
There’s also a lot of great smaller streams in the area where you can get BIG trout in the right conditions.

Lake Taupo is also a great trout fishery.

Turangi is about 4 and a bit hours from Auckland.

You will find New Zealanders, though hard to understand with their very strange accents and not easy on the eye are very friendly and helpful with the fishing.

Give me a call when you get here and I’ll put you on some water. Fresh or Salt. There are trout in the Auckland area, both North and South of it, but you will find, as already said, better trout fishing as you go South. My contact details are in my profile if you want to get in touch… Oh yeah and I’m easy on the eye and easy to understand… Anderson is just jealous of his little neighbour…

Thanks Clark, I’ll look you up once I get down there.

Completely agree with Clark… notice how Mr Anderson doesn’t have a pic in his profile. It’s a sister-brother-cousins thing with those Aussies if you know what I mean Tim!

    Good on you mate.
    Welcome
Give me a call/email when you get here and if theres anything I can help with, I’d be happy to. Heaps of fishing around Auckland but I’m picking you’ll want to experience a bit more than that! 😉 🙂
Watch out for that Clark fella, you’ll fish so much you’ll need to get residency to finish that PhD! ;D

    Hi,

I traveled to NZ a couple of times and fished around Rotorua. It is really an awesome place. Because of my limited time there, I got myself a guide from Rod and Reel in Auckland. The guide put my wife and I onto many good fish.

Since you got some time there, you would have many opportunity to explore. The Kiwis are really helpful and friendly, unless you are wearing a Gold and Green rugby jersey. 😛 There isn’t any dangerous snake or bear but just be a little more sensitive when the All Blacks lose. Rugby is a religion there *some say that it is an understatement” …. 😛

I would be bringing a friend to North Island in March next year. It would be his 1st time fly fishing for trout. Hopefully I would be able to make the trip fruitful for him too.

    Cheers!

Just don’t mention rugby at all… our moods can change without a game, just a news announcement on team selection can put the country into a state of depression… we’re not fanatical… just a little fanatical! 😀
