    Hey guys –

I recorded a very interesting interview with Sage’s Chief Rod Designer Jerry Siem last week, and it will go live tonight.  Be sure to check it out!

Man I’d love to talk to that guy! Why Sage doesn’t make a 7-12wt rod with the new “fly rod specific” ceramic guides and tip tops is beyond me. Having built several rods with the ceramics and bought a few without I’ve fished the exact rods side by side. I’m 100% convinced that for casting big heavy lines and flies there is no comparison between the two. Hands down the ceramics cast better, strip smother, look better, they are as durable if wrapped right, don’t inhibit the rods action as much, and will last waaaay

He does address that a bit; he talks about adding ‘micro-weight’ to the blank via ‘what you hang on it.’

The dealers have the list already.

And that’s the rub as I see it Zach. Some of us use these rods as tools and some use them as a show piece. Right now I have 3 Xi2’s 3 SLT’s, and one TCX, hanging up on rafters in my garage by a homemade rod hanging system that I made out of rope. I don’t stroke them, or wash them, or praise them, I fish them, and when I’m done I hang them up. They almost never see the tube or get broken down unless I’m on the road.

Weight isn’t a big deal to me. I’m using Momentum reels and throwing 350 grain lines. I’m not going to get bent out of shape over an extra half oz on my rod. I know of another company that cut all the “excess” weight out of thier rods lately too. I’ve seen two 10 wts broken in the butt section and heard of several others. Sure they cast great but if you actually catch a fish on one and you need to turn it, good luck. I’d love to get you out with the “traditional” rod casting all day and hand you a custom rod so you can feel the difference, really.

I’m not suggesting they should can the traditional rods but I wish someone would make a rod for the guys who care more about function then looking the part. I have had conversations with some very well know and talented rod builders and most all agree that ceramics make a better fly rod.

You can match them to the blank too 😉
