Greetings from Montana,
I’ve enjoyed many of the posts, trip reports and etc. on the board over the past several months and thought I’d contribute a bit. I was fortunate to have a chance to tag along on a Smith River trip last week here in MT. It was my first time floating the Smith, a river that requires a permit through lottery to float.
The highlights: 59 miles of class I water, 300 cfs, stunning canyon scenery, abundant wildlife, healthy browns and rainbows, good hatches, light fishing pressure, great camp sites…
The only downside was that I was the only serious angler on the trip (part of the reason for the lack of fish photos). I cringed every time we pulled into camp for the evening only to have my companions dive into the nearest deep run or pool for a swim – prompting a trout evacuation. None the less, the fishing was great, the trout were very healthy and were very willing to rise to attractor dries, stones, caddis and drakes throughout the day. I’m sure some of you have experienced this river, but for those who haven’t, I highly recommend doing so given the opportunity.

Great post Will … Looks like a fantastic trip. Some beautiful scenery, great photos, and what look to be tasty kabobs! The Smith has been on my ‘must do’ list for a few years, but I still have not found myself with the opportunity to go!
Smith was closed last time we tried to do that trip due to drought conditions.
Glad to hear things are right with it, and yes, its still on my list and might be a possibility for next year!
