While most everyone else was chasing Salmon flies across Montana, I chose to give the Madison in the Park another shot Sunday morning. On the water in National Park Meadow by 7AM, the fishing was strong all morning with lots of fish rising to caddis and PMDs and no other anglers close by.

About 10AM I moved down to the runs below 7 mile bridge and connected with this beauty–A 19.5″ Brown on a #10 Olive Bugger. Almost made it into the backing before I stopped him.

When I released him, he stayed close by my feet so I tried a few underwater shots with the Olympus 770SW. Nothing great, but his form shows through.

We left the park about 2PM as wind, sun, rain and a lack of bugs had pretty much shut down the fishing. The sad part for all you summer visitors was the traffic. Since we were heading toward West it didn’t effect us, but between 10:30AM and 2PM when we left the park, traffic was backed up from Madison Junction west beyond 7 mile bridge. When we left the park, traffic was 20 deep and 5 wide at the Entrance station. Maybe it was a special Sunday, but if I were visiting in July or August, I’d be planning very early starts.
