I’m a guide in Florida and sight-fishing for snook along the beaches is my specialty. I’ve been doing it for 25 years and the thrill is the same.
Last two years have been great in terms of number or fish and size of fish.
We use 6- to 8-weight rods, floating or sinktip lines, 12-pound leaders with 25-pound fluoro shock. Fly of choice is D.T. Special.
Things have started off good — and should get better toward the end of the month.
On a typical trip, my anglers get shots at up to 500 snook a morning.
Beach snook season is May through August. We have snook year round, but they’re in the bays or up creeks and rivers after they leave the beaches.
500 shots a morning? Is that right? If so….holy crap!!
I know that sounds inflated, but it’s not.
Damn!
On Monday, we got screwed on the beaches off Boca Grande Island for snook with a West Wind that blew in tons of kelp in that prevented any good beach fishing for snook. However Monday evening into Tuesday morning, the lighted docks along the Causeway and the island held 100s of snook that eagerly attacked glass minnow flies. Very challenging fishing with the tides, wind and darkness, but well worth the effort.
