I have used one of the older models for a while and really liked it … Its actually still going strong after a number of years. Other than no RAW, the w80 looks like a great point and shoot.

I have a Pentax W60. It is great. It takes great underwater shots of trout before release.

RAW is a lossless file format <-- Link to info .. Prob not a big deal. The w80 looks like a great camera, especially on the river.

    Todd,

The W-80 is a great camera.  Honestly, just pick one (Olympus or Pentax) that is a good deal and get it.  Check out http://www.flyartstudio.com where I have posted some tutorials on how to use a waterproof point-and-shoot camera.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me or post them here for discussion.

By the way, what are you holding in your avatar?

    Neal,
That’s not only a hockey trophy, that’s the hockey trophy.  Lord Stanley’s Cup, which will no doubt be returning to its home in Detroit next season.   🙂

    Todd,
I have an older model, the W30.

I have the Pentax W60 and it is a great camera for water environments.  The Pentax W80 is an upgrade from the W60 and there are some significant differences.  The W80 is 12 mp rather than 10 mp (no big deal).  The big difference is the W80 is the depth rating (16 feet) and shockproof features.  It is now more comparable to the newer Olympus SW series in these areas.

Unless you can get a very good deal on a W60, I would pay the extra $50 for the W80.

neal: yep, that is the Stanley Cup…my brother was a coach in Detroit two seasons ago (but is now trying to win in San Jose!)

i would post those pics, but i wouldn’t want to get arrested from that night….

    😉
