Got over my fear of breaking my camera this morning, so I left the house about 9:00 a.m. in search of N.C. trout.  Hitting Avery creek at approx. 10:30 my agenda was two-fold:

          1.  Avoid crowds
          2.  Actually catch fish so I could use the camera

I entered Pisgah National Forest at a ferocious pace.

    Took this.

    All I needed was this.

    Thrown in places like this.

    Produced these.

In all I fished about a mile of water for 3-4 hours.  Every good cast in a likely spot produced a rise.  Nothing of any size came to hand although I spooked a 12-13″ fish, which is a nice fish for Avery.  I really enjoyed having my SLR on stream for the first time, but I’m still looking forward to the having fishing partner so I can get a lot more fish pictures.

Nice .. Beautiful stream. I like all the reflected greens in the last shot!

Matt…getting past those few couple trips with the DSLR will put you at ease and you’ll carry it with you most of the time I suspect.

Matt .. I feel your pain. Going out solo and trying to get good pics is difficult to say the least. I am rarely happy with my pics from a scenario like that. I think you did a great job.

Personally, I’d jump at the opportunity to go do some fishing with Cameron! Plus, at some point you might get some cool shots of an angler fishing from a kayak!

Nice, looking very nice… but it is now a long slow down hill slide to carrying a 60lbs pack for an afternoons fishing… lol

BTW and it is just a pet hate… your flies are in their boxes the wrong way round.

Mike, I’ve never had a clue I was using my fly box incorrectly.  Does it make a noticeable difference the other way?

I did this for a while also. 🙂

    Nice Matt.

Aside from having access to good fly fishing rivers, this is my biggest hurdle and it’s common to alot of people. I try to make a decision, fish or shoot when solo. If I want to get good images, I leave the rod at home and head to a spot where I can shoot strangers fishing. Unfortunately, for me, that means I’m typically not doing fly fishing as it’s just not as popular up here, there basically only 1 river where I can count on finding people.  Would suggest the same, have some goto spots where you can either shoot other people fishing, or wet a line yourself. Its extremely difficult to do both, and ultimately one suffers for it.
