Hit Florida for some family fun and snuck in a little fishing while there. I didnt get into that Tarpon that I was looking for, but I really did get the lay of the land. I have to say that the Port Charlotte area has some unreal fishing opportunities and I cant wait to get back and explore a bit more.. I think my mom will be getting quite a few more visits from her grandson in the future  😉

Florida feels a bit 50s and 60s to me … So, I think my post processing tended in that direction.

Few more pictures in this report … It was a really fantastic trip and I hope that everything together gives a good “flavor” of what it is like!

    Yup .. We’re in Florida!

A little taste while exploring with my step-father and boy.

    Post fishing snacks.

Morning light @ Boca Grande Range Marker … A really cool landmark on the island.

    The fly box!

    The gear!

Went out with guide Jamie Allen who was patient with a guy who doesn’t get the opportunity to double haul much! He really helped me to understand where and how to fish the place. Weather was not cooperating and we really didnt see a ton of Tarpon rolling… but Jamie really had a fantastic eye for seeing them when they were.

    Blue fish!

We HAD to check out the pass … Its nuts .. Something to be seen.

Poling the flats and sand bars for Tarpon.

    A school of Cownose Rays.

    Trout!

A good way to end the day!!!

Not the Tarpon I was looking for … but a nice reminder to get my ass down there for another shot!

    Sunset in the backyard.

    Goodnight 🙂

Good stuff Corey. I really dig the lizard photo, cool texture with the screen! As for the Tarpon, maybe next time. At least it gives you yet another reason to visit.

    Great job Corey!

I’d love to hear how you produced #9 (the flats boat / map shot with the holographic technique).

The lizard photo and the last trout photo are great, but the sleeper to me is the shot of the guide on the platform with the rods in their rack.

Thanks everyone! The whole trip was a blast … We got right up on some rolling fish in the pass and I was just amazed. To the point of forgetting my camera and my rod for a few seconds. To see these fish up close on the surface is unreal!

On a photo note .. I picked up a new sigma 50-150 2.8 with a 2x converter for this trip and ended up returning it. I have had good luck with sigmas in the past, but this lens was a dud. Quality was pretty good, but autofocus was spotty. The 100-400 replacement is on the way!

Steve K. : Pretty easy to setup … Basically, bring in your shot as B/W in adobe raw and push it fairly hard. Add a new layer with the color you want to tint the photo and set the layer to darken and pull it back to get the right tone. Hit google and find a nice map pic … make it a layer in PS. I think I set this one to “color burn” and then pulled back the opacity.

Zach: Thanks! That low shot of the reels is my favorite shot from the trip.  🙂

Eric: Seeing those fish up close does make you think about putting down the fly rod, for a minute or two! 😉 After being out in the pass and seeing it up close .. I can actually see the the appeal. We met up with the guide in the yellow shirt later in the day. The way he was “into” it, gave me a different perspective and a little insight.

    Great photos Corey….as usual 🙂

Sweet stuff there Corey, looks like a great trip.  I’ve got a buddy heading down to fish the pass next week.  Said it looks like an island in the distance.

I have heard mixed reviews about this lens.  Sounds very inconsistent at best.  I have the 18-50 f/2.8, and was going to get the 50-150 w/ 2x TC as my complement to it.  Think I will revisit my options.

Travis: Thanks … Tell your buddy good luck for me! Hopefully, it will be nice and sunny for him!

Yeah .. I have mixed feelings about sigmas. I also have a the 18-50 and have had issues with that lens, also.

Great shots! Sorry you weren’t able to get into some Tarpon, it was a bit tough for us as well. The week before a buddy only saw 3, the week after us my Guide called and said they got blown off the water a bunch of days so the few days we got into them it was nice. Our last day we saw over 400…I’m still chomping at the bits to get back and to get payback for the 130lbr that broke me off &^(*%%$

Thanks Tradd .. Glad to hear you jumped a big one! Its a truly amazing place to fish … I’m ready to get back down there too! Plus, I think I have my step father talked into putting in a snook light! 😉
