MemberI’ve been using a CPAP maching since Oct 2007.
I was always a avid backpacker until getting the machine. BUT, I feel like a human again and don’t fall out of chairs when I read, look at the computer and such.
Question ???
I always camp when I go to Yellowstone and the Smokies, but have done neither since using the machine.
I purchased airline tickets today for August, will be in Yellowstone and surrounding areas. I have an inverter and extension cord, has anyone ever been in this situation?

MemberDavid,
I have had a CPAP since last summer and if I am going to be gone for a few short days, I don’t even take it with me.
I do take it on extended vacations. I would imaging Zach is right about using a electric hookup at the campground if that is possible.
I would think that the CPAP and inverter would drain a battery over night.
You have me wondering if there is a dc version of the CPAP now. I am off the search the web!!!

MemberDavid,
Zach is right – you will need the converter for electricity. To date the medical community has been unable to develop reliable CPAP battery powered units, mainly because there is no real demand at the moment. However, we are diagnosing OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) more frequently and in younger active patients so the future might be promising. Call your doctor and ask what they recommend and I’ll ask around tomorrow to see if there are any alternatives for your situation. It’s a good question really.
Here is an internet DYI battery setup http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/sleep-disorders/archives/Snoring_apnea_backup.htm

MemberI have sleep apnea, skipped the use of the CPAP and opted for a uvulaectomy.

Memberwould the sound attract or scare off bears?
that was my first thought.
i use the generic breathe right strips. wish i could wear them all day long. to many fists and footballs to the face as a kid to breathe through my honker.

MemberA friend of mine has a battery powered cpap that is good for 10hrs. It weighs around 5lbs. You can purchase extra batteries for about $100. We will be experimenting in July with a Brunton soalr roll to recharge it in the field.
I will try and find the name and model of it for you.

MemberHere you go. I am not sure if your insurance would cover it, but for me it would be worth the money to spend time in the back country.

MemberRob, The loud snoring and gasping air sounds attracks the bears.

MemberFYI, I asked around today and the consensus is that the battery powered units are not reliable.

MemberWay to go Neal, burst our bubble. I guess I’ll have to put that 400 bucks toward some new fishing gear. 😉

I’ll always camped at Pebble as soon as I could get over there, always have a few days booked along the lake or at Madison Junction. Never looked in RV sites.
May have to take a small charger and buy a car battery at parts store.
As to going a night or two without it, I wouldn’t take a nap without it, I’ve fallen asleep a couple of times, sick headed and dizzy when I finally get going again.
I mentioned my condition to my Dr., an avid outdoorsman, he looked at me and said you don’t have the build of a typical sleep disorder person but you described it to a tee.
I put a meter on mine, running AC, CPAC is pulling 40 watts at 120 V.
Of the 4 levels of sleep, I was barely making it into the 2nd level, for the last year or so I was looking at the clock more than I was alseep, couldn’t drive to town without almost running off the road, coming to and be sitting in the middle of the road stopped, thank God I was one who slowed down instead of flooring it when I started going out.
As I tell people to make a point, I like the company of a woman and love my wife dearly, but she will leave the bedroom before my CPAP ;D
My best fishing bud who will be coming out with me, had the surgery coming up on two years ago, broke his jaws, wired him shut and the whole 9 yards. He was wired shut for 5 months. Got staph infection.
I had knee surgery 7 years ago and got staph, spent 8 days in the hosp with 3 different needles running antibotics in me, antibotics quit working and finally found something that worked, I was weak for over 6 months, temp got up to 105.6, thought I was a dead man.
So for that reason, I steer away from any surgery unless I just have to have it.

I had the nose surgery and what was to be day surgery ended up being in the hospital for 3 days. I could not breath because of the anastesia they used.
So like you I said not to any more surgery and use the CPAP too. It may be one more thing to take along, but I wouldn’t be without it.

MemberThere have been several suggestions to “skip” a couple of nights.

MemberI’ve been on the CPAP machine for years but when I was going to Wyoming several times a year I just didn’t want the hassle of dealing with it. I’ve never gone more than a week without using the machine though.
I believe the dry air in Wyoming at least in my case allows me to breathe a little easier. Couple that with the scenery, fishing, and superior beef steak and I’m so happy I don’t even want to come back!
