I have a question regarding 2 piece vs. 4 piece rods.

    Rob,

It used to be that a 2-piece vs. a 4-piece rod exhibited a noticable difference in action and feel.

    Ditto to what Tim said.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

unless you are fishing truly big game, go for multi piece.

I’ve seen two 4 pc tarpon rods exploded at ferrules.

If you plan to throw sink tips, shooting heads, etc,

Check out the Grey’s streamflex rods…

I still believe 4-piece rods are slightly stiffer. Also, they are more likely to come apart when being cast. (I’ve broken several ferrules; so now I make sure I check my connections every two hours or so.)

A good solution is to use parafin wax on the ferrules every so often.

But don’t use too much wax unless you want them bonded for life 🙂

I still fish several 2 piece rods, I really like them and they have held up well, so I have had no reason to replace them with multi-piece.

I have a fantastic 20 year old Scott G885/3 that comes apart at the bottom ferrule.

I had a talk to Jerry Siem at the Denver show last year and asked Jerry what he thought the biggest single advance in fly rod technology and construction in the last decade had been. Expecting something about resins and graphite scrims I was surprised when he said “ferrule development”. Go with the 4 piece.

I do not believe that current 4 pc rods cast any worse than their 2 pc counterparts.

From an engineering perspective, it would be impossible for a ferruled section to have the same characteristics as a continuous section. It would have to be heavier, probably stiffer, and would be a nest of stress concentrations. That being said, it must be damn small because I have never been able to measure the difference or tell the difference in casting. And 4 piece rods are damn convenient.

    Godspeed and good fishing,

    Bob

And Bill, I do have to call your dad and see how he is doing. For those of you who don’t know, Bill’s dad is a master skeet and trap shooter, a tournament bridge player, and one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known.
