This weekend is my 37th wedding aniversary and I am obliged NOT to fish.  However that does not mean I cannot Watch Fish.  So we are spending the weekend in Yellowstone watching the fish in the Madison, Firehole and Gibbon Rivers.  (Catching in the park starts in 3 weeks).

Although we usually stay in town, this time we chose the Bar N. Ranch which is just 6 miles West of WEST.  Its a great lodge  with cabins for larger parties. It has a first class dining room, but best of all its got several miles of frontage on the South Fork of Madison River–a great spring Rainbow and great Fall Brown stream.  As I am always looking for interesting Kayaking streams, I’ve found my place for a great Fall trip.

Its not the cheapest place in West, but then again its not in West but out in country, yet close enough for easy trips to the Madison, Firehole and Gibbon.  The Dining room is great and food is fantastic.  We will be dining on steak and expensive wine tonight to celebrate our 37th.

The Bar N. Ranch. — http://www.bar-n-ranch.com/ is run by a young couple– Mike and Gayle Gavagan – transplants from LA and UP Michigan.  Mike however seems to be the consumate borne again Montana angler.

I will be booking a stay this October to tap into late season Browns on the South Fork and a lonely Firehole River.
Here’s a few shots of the South Fork Friday evening.  Lots of BWOs coming off with fish everywhere. (Catching also begins in 3 weeks)
