The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
Credit Ian Crabtree’s sharp eye for products with finding this one. While expensive, this highly water resistant (read: waterproof unless you try to swim with it) bag looks to be the perfect solution for those of us who would like an all-purpose travel bag that can both protect laptops and cameras, etc., from the elements, and also serve as a full-blown suitcase for airline travel. I could see wearing this bag right onto the plane, gate-checking it, and never letting any of your gear out of your sight for a week in Brazil or the Bahamas, etc. Best of all, it could go right on a kayak or into a flats skiff for a wet crossing to the lodge or camp (both situations I have been in – and I was without bags for 3 days in Brazil thanks to not gate-checking my carryon).

Bad boy also comes in a smaller size for less aggressive packing. Arc’Teryx is an extremely respectable outdoor company (in case you are living on the moon, in South Africa, or in Australia). They had a close partnership going with Simms for a while, and while I never heard this explicitly stated, reading between the lines, I believe that they may have had a hand in designing Simms’ new line of backpacks (also sweet) for this year.
Arrakis 50 is $449, Arrakis 40 is $400.

Steve K.Member….and we thought the Patagonia Stormfront was expensive at $300. I’d love to fondle them side-by-side to see if the Arc’Teryx is worth the extra cheese. On another note….I never did see the Orvis or the Willie Joe waterproof backpacks in a catalog or flyshop. Was that just a dream on my part?

Bob RigginsMemberThat price seems a little over the top.

The Itinerant AnglerPrice is most likely due to radio welding every seam.

Bob RigginsMemberThis is a huge coincidence, but I was over at steep and cheap a little while ago and they had this bag on for $208.

The Itinerant AnglerActually, that’s nice to know, Bob.

Memberlook on steepandcheap.com and you can find this type of stuff at very good prices. I have seen this company’s stuff on there many times, but have no need for such high end gear.

MemberIf you’re planning on trolling Steepandcheap for something specific like this, there’s a Firefox plugin that sticks the current item for sale in the info bar at the bottom of the window – it seems like the only way short of obsessively refreshing the page to have a shot at finding what you’re looking for.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Matt –
Thanks, I’ve used that plug in before.

Bob RigginsMemberYes Zach, they are somehow affiliated with Backcountry.com. They run a single item at a steep discount until that item is sold out and then move on to the next item. You have to check periodically to see what is on there. I’ve seen a lot of higher end camping and outdoor stuff on the site.
I did buy a pair of Costa del Mar sunglasses from them at about 25% of retail. Service was good. I almost bought a Sierra Designs tent for about the same discount, but someone came in the office while I was looking at it and it was gone be the time I turned back to the computer.
There is also a way to register for notifications when items change, but I don’t use it.
