MemberWell my goal for this years spring break was to go on at least two fishing outings. I managed to accomplish that. Got to spend some time with my father and a man who has always been a ‘grandpa’ like figure to me. That right there made the week worth itself. Asides from that though we also got into fish and plenty of them.
Took a trip to Louisville for school. One of our chaperone’s was a fly fisherman. We got to talk plenty of fishing and led us into possibly meeting up at a creek sometime in the future.

Louisville:

For all you baseball fans:

My first trip of the week got cancelled, the track coach had other hings in mind. He called a early morning practice and I couldn’t get out of it.
So Thursday morning I awoke to a good looking forecast and headed to a stream that has always been good to me. Me and my fishing partner managed to land about 30 some fish altogether. Weather was great, fishing was nice, and nothing like seeing a good hatch of bugs come of to start your spring off right. Now for the goods…..
Scenery:

Managed to throw some big stuff for the first half of the day. Got into some nice browns. I missed one fish that probably would have landed me around 20 inches. Heck of a nice pool, and had the ‘stalk and hunt’ follow but just couldn’t get him to play.
Bait:

Was working for these fellas:

Switched over to a nymph rig after lunch and started to fish pocket water and the faster swifter runs. I found skittles and plenty of them.

Friday I had a track meet in Ritchie Co. No fishing for me. Managed to find a cool little creek there that follows the ‘rails and trails’ system when I was on my warm-up run. Looked like fishy water. Might have to go fish it on a day this summer.
Saturday headed to Concord University to finish up stuff for the Fall semester. Drove by a few well known streams. Didn’t have the rod though. Tough sitting in the car watching out the window, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Will just have to find time this fall in between studying and running to go fish a few of them.
Sunday me, my father, and the fishing partner from earlier in the week headed to brookie country. We planned on fishing a northern stream in the state. The forecast called for rain, but it only showered lightly for maybe 15 minutes. The flows were perfect. A prolific hatch of Quill Gordon’s went on all day but, no fish were responding. Had to high stick it most of the time. Managed to land over 30 fish between the three of us. Was again another great day to be fishing in WV.

I am proud to say that I grew up and lived in WV. This state is the best around. Beautiful in so many ways. The people who live here and take care of it can never be thanked or appreciated enough. Life is short and this week I got to just sit back and soak it all in. God put us as close to him as he could. Whenever they said “Almost Heaven, West Virginia” they sure weren’t lying. Hope you all enjoyed.

MemberGreat pics. Fish and plants- trillium/ramps.
I have yet to find wild ramps, though I’ve never really looked for them.

MemberThanks guys. I won the mile in 4:32, and won the 800 in 2:00. Still early in the season. I hope to improve those times by a fair margin come the end of May.
