MemberI just returned from 11 days of off-the-beaten-track fishing in Costa Rica with my friends Dave Sherwood (http://www.wildfilephoto.com) and Peter Gorinsky (http://www.flyfishincostarica.com).

MemberKeep posting Matt. That fish looks like a piranha species – is it related?
The machaca is of the family Characidae which is the same family that the piranha belongs to. It definitely shows in the teeth – they’ll cut 20lb flouro no problem, so wire is the way to go. Fishbase lists the largest specimen on record as 9.5lbs – we caught one that was a shade over 7lbs on an IGFA certified Boga and quite a few over 5lbs, so there are certainly some good fish in this system.
Love the ‘nap’ photo.
In 11 days we did a lot of fishing, almost as much driving (Nicaragua to Panama – all of it on poor roads with psychopaths trying crash into us) and very little sleeping – I don’t think that was the only nap that was taken on the water during that week.

MemberIncredible. That is some exciting fishing. Did you have any trouble with border crossings? Looking forward to more shots.
Also, being a turtle person, I’m interested in those olive Ridley arribada shots.

Gary, we to/from Nicaragua at a tiny little town called Los Chiles – it was a very relaxed affair, though we were the only gringos there – it’s mostly people making day trips to visit family on the other side of the border.

MemberRealy nice pics Matt. They tell the story well. The only thing I noticed, because I have had people point this out to me before, is that the water does not appear level in pic 1 & 10.
They are all nice pics, but my favorites are: 1,2,3,7,8, 10.
I look forward to seeing more images from your trip!

MemberCritique-wise, I like the elongation of a lot of these shots, especially the last one, but on my browser at least they look just a tad soft. Just FYI – there could be many reasons, like setting a wide aperture for subjects that are at various distances, fog/grease on the lens, etc.
Zach, thanks for the feedback – I may just need to apply a bit of sharpening to the shot for output.

MemberFantasic photos, I especially like the napping shot. What kind of ‘trout’ frequent the higher elevations that you mention? I never would have thought that there would be freshwater trout in Central America.
Henry – the trout are introduced, but wild, rainbows – they were backpacked in decades ago and have thrived.
The only thing I noticed, because I have had people point this out to me before, is that the water does not appear level in pic 1 & 10.
Thanks John,

MemberAlso, being a turtle person, I’m interested in those olive Ridley arribada shots. Were you around Ostional or Playa Nancite? Often I’ve dreamed of visiting just to see those mass nesting events. Several turtlers I know have visited more than once and not seen one of that magnitude. Awesome.

Gary,
The turtle shots (over at http://www.wildfilephoto.com) were taken by my friend Dave Sherwood.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Rob –
There’s been some talk about a calendar in the past but I’m afraid I’d rather not do it, for a bunch of reasons.
