Joel ThompsonMemberI am a mere three days away from leaving for New Zealand! I have started the packing process for at least the gear part of the trip. Going with me will be my Winston BIIX 9’6″ 6wt, Sage ZAxis 9’6″ 5wt, and my Winston BIIMX 9′ 5wt. I wanted to take the BIIx 4wt as well but I don’t have a tube for it and figured I would be able to get by with out it.
This is a trip of a life time for my wife and I and I promise a lot of great pictures to post upon our return!
Simon Chu, get the fly rods and scotch ready…we will be there soon! π

Mike McKeownMemberGot a mate down there at the moment, I understand your frustrations, but he only took his 5w 9′ Zeddy and 6w 9′ TCX…
If you can squeeze your rods into one tube then do it, or Sage, Orvis and FishPond make travle bags that do away with rod tubes…
Whatch You Weight… all the gear adds up real quick…

MemberJoel,
My dream trip is to NZ. You da Man!
If you have a min. could you comment on what you had to do prior to your trip in regards to “invasives”? I have heard of gear having to be washed and certified, having to get new boots and flies bought in NZ??? Not sure what is true and what may be hype but figured you might know.
I am sure if you are linking up with a guide the will have all the answers but I just thought I would ask.
Thanks!

David, Simon warned me you Aussies were hard to understand. ::)
K2, There has been a lot of new gear bought for this trip. Boots are a for sure thing as the felt is no longer allowed. As far as flies go I have heard both yes and no on so I am bringing mine.
I am a little concerned about my waders as they are quite stained from guiding out of them for the past couple of years. I am going to try and put a clean on them to see if it helps but I am sure I will be holding my breath on getting them in.
Dusty, Two weeks is all we could swing. All ready doesn’t seem long enough but it certainly gives us a good excuse to go back! π

Not that I have ever been there, but I would be tempted to take the rattiest pair of waders and, of course, non-felt boots I could find. I would be ultra-pissed to get to the airport, here or there, and find out my gear had been quarantined.
Either way, live well as I do so vicariously!!

Colin M.MemberAlot of the vids and photos of guys i’ve seen wading down there show that waders aren’t always the ticket.

Simon ChuMemberJoel and his wife will hopefully be on the plane by now and I should be having that first scotch with him in less than 48hrs. π
I think some fat trout might be in order? πDA, when are you coming over? Its those spring creeks where you caught your big ole brown is where I hope to go on Sunday. Weather looks iffy though

David AndersonMemberThat’s such a beautiful creek Simon – Joel will no doubt love it.
I’m in discussions with my friend Quinny about going to Turangi this winter to remind the locals that Australia has their coach and, if I survive, fish a little.. ;D
I miss the big river and fancy a fling with the double hander.. π
