Joel ThompsonMemberI have been thinking about having a fly fishing tournament this summer at the ranch I work at. We have all heard about the “One Fly” fishing tournaments where a guy get to choose just one fly and go out and fish with that fly until time is up or until he looses it. Pretty cool event as it not only make you be careful in your selection of fly but it also makes you fish a little more careful.
Well here is the twist I want to put on the tourney. I want to do the one fly thing but you have to make the fly. The twist to this is each person will get one hook of their choice, one bobbin with the color of thread of their choice, one vice, and one whip finish tool. Then they will be sent out into the field and they must find the stuff to create their fly from nature. Anything goes there so if they find some garbage laying on the ground and they think they can create something from it then more power to them.
So what do you think? Does this sound like something that would be fun or is it a bit over the top?

J/K it actually sounds pretty cool…I’d do it as long as you didn’t limit how many beers I could have.

The Itinerant AnglerI was going to say, why not just give them a compass, a pocket watch, and a knife and then drop them out the back of an airplane in the bush?

Joel ThompsonMemberWhoever comes back alive wins the $125 TFO 5 weight.
Woa woa woa Zach! we are in tough economic times here buddy! I was thinking more along the lines of a homemade willow with some string and a hook attached! 😮
Seriously, has no one here ever tried to tie up something from nature before? I guess I live in the land of road kill. Dead deer, dead elk, every size, color, and shape of dead bird. Dead ground squirrels, dead muskrat…you get my point. Plus I have seen all kinds of different vegitations that I think a guy could tie with.

John BennettMemberI think its a cool idea, the winner could likely be he who adapts the best, not he who predicts the best
Meaning: Under the 1 fly format, you make your best guess and are stuck with it. With your proposed format, as written, theres nothing preventing an angler from “re-tieing” mid tourney as long as they have still have the hook and thread. They might do that for any number of reasons.
They could make their initial tie out of whatever, but perhaps while walking the bank they find something, think it has potential and stuff in their pocket just incase.
Would flies found in trees/brush creekside be eligible for scavenging?
Would need an honor system but………Feb 10, 2009 at 7:42 pm #33651Rob Snowhite
Memberhow about one leader too. no extra tippet.
i either read an article or saw a show where a guy spoke of finding things on his walk to the stream and tying flies for that day at the stream with the materials he finds-like a plucked feather.
was it a podcast here maybe?
can’t remember.

InactiveDecent twist on an existing idea.
I for one simply think there is nothing like introducing competition to immediately strip the fun from something.

MemberJoel,
Not everyone can tie flies and there’s probably not alot of synthetics laying around the ranch. Think about this twist–Call it the Two Fly.
All the contestants must draw from a stock of flies, two to a package. Each package contains two files–one of a classic design, one of a modern design. Wets, Drys, Streamers and Nymphs would be mixed by twos at random with each draw containing at least two different types. All the flies would be suitable for the waters to be fished, but the fisherman would have to know how to fish the flies they drew. It would challenge all the fisherman to be up on all the different presentations and they would have to have the skills necessary to exploit the flies they drew.
Just a thought to entice those who might not know how to tie files.

I would tie the thread on the hook and be catching fish on my black midge while everyone else was still looking for tying materials.

MemberWhat a variation on your One Fly idea??? You have teams of two — one ties the first fly that is used for the first part of the tournament by other team member. Time limits can be included, but being generous you have a three hour maximum — using that one fly tied by Partner A that is fished on whatever given water by angler Partner B — Partner A has time limit to tie fly of say 15 minutes including selecting hook, materials etc. After fishing is done by Partner B then that person has equal amount of time to select and tie a different pattern which Partner A then fishes for whatever maximum time limit is. Twist could be that first fly is dry and second is nymph.
