Joel ThompsonMemberFriday was my birthday and my lovely wife surprised me with quite the gift! She got me a brand spanking new Benelli Sport II 12 gauge shotgun! I have been drooling over this gun for a while now and apparently I must have dropped just the right amount of hints!

Mark SchaferMemberNice.. Is this going to be a dedicated clay games gun or will you be sporting it in the field also. Has the wife mentioned any hints for her birthday. 😉

Joel ThompsonMemberMark I wouldn’t dedicate any shotgun to just shooting clays! After all it is in the guns nature to go after “real” birds at some point and time…right?
No hints yet but her birthday is not until June. Hopefully I will be able to take care of that present on the New Zealand trip…

Mark SchaferMemberThat’s my way of thinkin I have bird guns that I shot clays with. What do you think of the fit,any shimming?
Some gifts come with no strings attachedFeb 9, 2009 at 11:05 pm #33576
Joel ThompsonMemberThe fit is really good at this point Mark. I will be shooting the gun for the first time on Wednesday and should have a better feel after that.
The owners manual recommends shooting a heavier load during the break in period. I have never been a huge fan of magnum loads but I was always shooting my over under which meant my shoulder was taking the brunt of the kick. It will be interesting to see how much this new auto takes in the way of the kick.

Mark SchaferMemberI will confess to being a Beretta guy (391’s) and they suggest the same for the break in period I interpreted that to mean no wimpy reloads.
If you haven’t seen this it is very impressive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5uHt4AwYb4

Joel ThompsonMemberI think that is a guy that has had WAY too much time on his hands over the years. Damn impressive though!

MemberI think Tom Knapp has a TV show called American Bird Hunter. He is a pretty funny guy and emphasizes safety a lot on his show. Its a good show, he doesn’t do all the trick shooting though, he mostly just goes hunting.
I have a Benelli Super Nova. Its my only gun at this point, but its a heck of a work horse and goes bang every time. Its not a sexy / classic sporting gun but it gets the job done and I don’t have to worry about beating it up in a duck blind.

MemberI’m about to go the auto route eventually. . Had an epic grouse season- LOTS of flushes.

Mark SchaferMemberI will grab one of the autoloaders if I hope to do a lot of shootin say for doves or plan to use some bigger pay loads for

MemberI admire you guys that can shoot 12 gages. I have 3 twelves and a 20 in my gun case gathering dust. Got hit head on by a drunk driver a few years back and had a few plates and screws added to my neck. Can’t take the recoil anymore. Had to quit skeet shooting but I still hunt. I use a S X S 28 gage for grouse and woodcock and I just love it. Points instinctively and my percentage has gone way up. Of course I couldn’t hit grouse worth a darn before so any improvement is a big plus.

Mark SchaferMemberGrant,
I have the plain jane 686 but what a great shooter I had Briley .410 tubes made to use it for skeet, do you use a 12 or 20 for them doves.Feb 13, 2009 at 1:23 am #33585
Mark SchaferMemberJoel,
You said you would be shooting that gun how’d it go.Feb 13, 2009 at 2:05 pm #33586
Joel ThompsonMemberIt went very well Mark! Love the feel of the gun and there were a lot of dusted clays out there as well. The only thing I didn’t like was the two boxes of magnum shells I had to shot through it for the break in. Even with the gun being an auto those magnums still have a good kick. The gun handles them a lot nicer then my O/U did though. The other thing I hate about those magnum loads is they really dirty up the gun. 🙁

Mark SchaferMemberGrant,
When I was in South Dakota last year they talked about a sandhillFeb 13, 2009 at 5:30 pm #33589Grant Wright
MemberSandhill is great to eat….I’ve heard them called the “sirloin in the sky”.
If you soak them in saltwater overnight, cube the breast meat, load it on a skewer with some jalepenos,
