Hey guys –
I am not calling anyone in particular out here since I have never exactly laid this out (or at least, it’s been a while). However, I have deleted or moved a few threads recently because they didn’t really fit the gist of this particular forum. I would like to explain that.
I want this to be a community where people can get to know each other and talk about stuff other than fly fishing, but at the same time I want it to be very fly-fishing centric at its core.
I have thought about creating an Off Topic board for more casual discussion, but I’ve decided against it for three reasons: (1) in my experience “off topic” quickly morphs into politics and flaming, both of which are out of bounds on this board, (2) “off topic” often includes discussion of religion, and (3) “off topic” is a lot harder to police in terms of setting boundaries, meaning many posts tend to walk a line between poor taste and outright bad taste. I hate editing and censorship and I always operate on the philosophy that I will give you enough rope to hang yourself, meaning I will leave up a post that I consider in poor taste. Some stuff is just obviously in bad taste and has to go. The hard part is the gray area in between, and “off topic” invites stuff in that zone which I can never be satisfied that I have handled correctly.
As far as religion goes, I have mine and most of you either have yours or don’t. I respect your decisions either way. While I might be personally honored to receive, for example, a prayer request in my private life, I don’t view this as the appropriate place for such things, yet on many boards they are de rigueur.
