Mmmmmmmmmmmm……..
Don’t get too worked up about this…….just over the hill the fruit growers are probably busy shooting just as many 😛I once saw a video on the Australian wine business and they highlighted the growing problem with the bats.
Yes Neal that’s them. Flying Foxes we call them , fully grown they have a head about the size of a Chihuahua and a wing span of 2 feet.
So you can only imagine how much fruit a flock of 500 or so would eat in a night. Although we don’t have rabies here , these guys have bacteria in their mouths that can make their bite extremely dangerous.I’m sure us folks here in the southern U.S.A would do the exact same thing if we had a bunch of starving baby ‘possums.
Those bats give me the creeps.
I came across thousands of them one day while fishing on the Turon river about 3 hours west of Sydney and ended up walking way around them for the mess they made.
There’s also zillions of them in Sydney and at night they hover around the harbor bridge and centerpoint tower.
In the day they camp in the botanic gardens.
Again, very creepy !

You guys do have some stragne stuff over there alright!!!
We only have a couple of bats… like mice with wings… only seen a couple in my lifetime.
until the maori arrived here it was the only mammal. they brought polynesian rats (Kiore) and a polynesian dog (Kuri)… the europeans brought all the other mammals we now have.

If you walk through some of the parks in Sydney around the Sury Hills end, you’ll see Jurrasic-Park-ish-things like small cats with deamon wings launching temselves out of trees as you walk by. This in a city of 4 million people! And like Dave said, you’ll see ’em littered throughout some of the tree’s in the botanic gardens during the day, like a macarbre Xmas tree.
I’ve walked around Jade Stadium after a Wallabies/All Black Test and seen some wierd sh** too!!!

I dug these photos out of the archive from my trip to Australia in 2006. Â Are these the same bats we are talking about here? Â These were taken in the daytime in that big park in Sidney (can’t remember the name)?
Yep, that’s them ..
There’s a biggish river on the western edge of Sydney called the Napean and on hot summer nights we take our float boats (Abel Travel craft) and fish for the bass there and every night on dark thousands of them fly up the river from wherever to wherever – it’s quite a sight !
I’ll try to get some shots no that it’s getting to bass time again..
