Cousin Introduced To Montana Trout

I had the pleasure to host my young cousin Matt for 4 days of fishing in Montana this week. I’ve been taking Matt fishing since he was nine, but this was his first trip for Montana trout. We spent the four days in our Kayaks floating the Ruby, Beaverhead, Jefferson and E. Gallatin rivers. Monday night when he arrived in Bozeman we took him to Sir Scott’s for a real Montana Steak then we drove down to Twin Bridges Tuesday morning for an overnight at the Stonefly Inn and an overnight camp on the Jefferson. Fishing was just average because of Blue Bird, 80+ degree weather but we did manage a good number of fish to include a 20” rainbow hen I took in a Jefferson River diversion canal. A side trip up the Big Hole was very productive for rainbows in the 1st six holes going upstream.
We floated from Twin Bridges to Silver Star and made an overnight camp on an island just upstream from Hells Canyon. Dinner was two nicely grilled Browns that went down well with a bottle of wine. Back in Bozeman on Thursday evening, Matt got to taste a bit of Dave’s Sushi. Friday we made a 7.6 mile float on the E. Gallatin. The weather was ideal for BWOs and streamers. We connected all day with dozens of browns and rainbows in every pool and bend. Matt got a real taste for big trout and lots of them from a small stream.

Which Native Ultimate do you have? I am putting coins together to pick up a Native Ultimate 14.5 this winter and seeing yours isn’t making it any easier to not obsess about getting one sooner rather than later.
I have the Ultimate 12 Tegris–The primary reason is weight. The Tegris is only 36lbs which I can handle pretty well by myself. I am totally sold on the Ultimate profile which allows be to stand and cast on the bigger water and is a joy to wade with on the smaller water. On this recent trip, there was more than enough room to stash all the camping and other gear in dry bags. Its a great ride for rivers and flats.
