InactiveI am looking for some new streamer patters for trout. Most of the streamers I tie are for Great Lakes steelhead and tend not to be complicated. A little estaz body, covered by zonker strip and a bit of a red throat. Black, white, purple, orange…done.
But I want to tie some more “realistic” and “buggy” looking streamers for river trout. I prefer the tying process to be pretty straightforward, the fewer the materials the better…but obviously it needs to be effective.
One more thing…I’m not a big fan of the over the counter Orvis wolly bugger either.

The Clouser fits this criteria very well. Effective and easy to tie.

I have started a swap and nobody seems to be interested in it..
This is a fly I have started making for big browns and it has proven itself.. Granted I fish this mostly at night but there has been some big bruiser caught day the day..http://www.taneycomonights.com/Forum/tabid/54/forumid/11/threadid/172/scope/posts/Default.aspx

MemberBIG articulated sculpins, crayfish and leeches are good for the big guys and I’ve been suprised how many smaller fish will take a shot at a 6″ long fly.
Sex Dungeons, Circus Peanuts and a woolhead/cross cut rabbit body/marabou tail leech have all been good.
I use lots of weight…or fish lighter flies on a full sinker…and rip them back as fas as possible.
Black, Olive, White and Brown are more colors than you will need but help add a bit of variety.

MemberTim,
In streams where there is a large crayfish population a cone headed rubber legged wolly bugger is pretty hard to beat.

MemberBrett, I agree. One of my favorites is the Autumn Splendor from Charlie’s Fly Box.

MemberZoo Cougar is awesome …

Circus peanut is my ‘go to’, with sex dungeon at a close second. I started tying a fly based on the circus peanut using UV materials .. and done very well with it.
I use a sink tip, but will be switching over to a full sink with my next streamer line.

MemberTim,
I am going to throw my hat in for the Articulated streamers as well.
Alot of times a brown with short strike the tail and you have a better chance of getting a hook in him with the articulated (or tube) flies.Sep 17, 2008 at 5:24 pm #29285leonard keeney
Memberthe PMS when wet is light enough to cast with a 5wt…
Put a bead on it and still cast great..
But the strike it will get ..WOW.. they damn near rip the rod out of your hands!!
