    Hey Guys,
Sorry about not really being in the loop lately. I’ve been trying to finish getting my degree out here at Wyoming. So here is why i am posting This topic. For my Pro Siminar class my prof gave one paper to write for the entire semester. The subject is history of something you are passionate about. I have choosen FLY FISHING as my topic. We have to have like thirty five sources cited in our paper. I only have just a few so i am reaching out to my Fishing Brothers to see if you guys can point me in any particular direction. I am trying to focus my paper on Fly Fishing in the USA.
    thanks guys,
    nick

    Nick,

Here’s a good bibliography on fly fishing to start out with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annotated_bibliography_of_fly_fishing

Additionally, I would try and get my hands on all of Paul Schullery’s books, especially the American fly fishing-A History, Andrew Herd’s The Fly, and Tony Hayter’s: F.M. Halford and the Dry-Fly Revolution.  Additionally, if you can find copies, Arnold Gingrich’s The Fishing in Print and the The Joys of Trout are excellent sources for fly fishing history.

Also, remember that most of the pre-1923 works are in the public domain and can be downloaded from at least one internet archive.

    Good Luck.

Nick, the reference librarian at your university library will be glad to show you how to use the various indices to the published literature.

    Try these:

    http://www.amff.com/

    http://www.flyfishinghistory.com/

    http://www.cffcm.net/history.htm

They’re not books, but sources that can lead you in many directions.

    Good luck!

Wikipedia should have everything you need for a good final paper.

    Nick,

Being a fellow college student here is my advice. I know that you said you are focusing on the history of fly fishing in the US. In addition to the basic background of fly fishing history I would also add about the introduction of the various forms of fly fishing and the development of fly fishing locations through out the US. This will open up the door for many references to you and would be pretty interesting. Also I would include how the fly fishing culture has changed throughout time in the US. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys… The university Librarians and I have been spending lots of time finding scholarly works and utilizing the archives. (I can’t stand using the archive.) It sounds like I am on the right path. The input and advice should help heaps. My goal for posting was to make this paper more manageable.  This really helps.
    Thanks again.

Another bit of advice from a writing prof:

Sounds like you’re on the right track, but, as tempting as it will be, don’t bite off more than you can thoroughly chew in the pages allotted to the assignment.

As an adjunct to methods such as this, a visit to the school’s library is a great idea.

    Nick,

As many of the posts are pointing you in the direction of libraries you should know that in Wyoming you have two of the natiionally prominent fly fishing collections:

    The LaFontaine Angling Collection
University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center, Rare Book Collection, Laramie, WY

Frederick and Clara Toppan Angling Book Collection
University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center, Rare Book Collection

Plus on the Wikipedia Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annotated_bibliography_of_fly_fishing, there are 85 direct links to online PDF versions of the classics of 16th-early 20th century fly fishing literature.
