So my lovely fiancee finally agreed on taking our honeymoon early next June out west to yellowstone and I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations for a small cabin for us that has more of a log cabin feel than a modern feel?

I had figured on trying to find somewhere close to the NW corner of the park, maybe around paradise valley, since we plan on fishing several streams in both the SW and NE corners.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Call Craig or John at http://www.blueribbonflies.com. They guide in that area.

They used to own a house on the Madison that they rented….they also could point you in the right direction if you tell them what you are looking for.

You are smart to start looking now. If you were gonna be with a bunch of guys that were only concerned about fishing….I’d tell you to stay at the Roosevelt Lodge cabins for about $65 a night.

Yeah if it wasn’t our honeymoon we’d either be staying in a place like that or in a campground. Luckily, she’s outdoorsy so future trips will be in a place like that but i figured i better find a nice place for our honeymoon so i don’t hear about it forever.

Thanks for the advice i will give them a call sometime. Thinking about getting a floated guide trip, i’m guessing go with them for that as well?

It has been too long and the place is under new ownership, but the Old Kirby Place on the Madison is nice.  They have a side house that might suit you needs.   The main house might be a bit too crowded for your needs, but it is also very nice.

Note that the Madison is tough to wade.  My wife and I enjoyed the trip, but the Madison is not really what I prefer.

Also consider a backcountry trip on horses.  That is one of my next dream trips.  You can get with an outfitter that will take care of everything and make great meals, if that is what you want.

These ideas are not in your precise area, but perhaps close enough.

    Craig,

Blue Ribbon can handle the guided trip as well. Tell them that you’re wife will be with you so they can appeal to her tastes as well. Maybe a little less fishing and a more elaborate shore lunch…..

I had figured on trying to find somewhere close to the NW corner of the park, maybe around paradise valley, since we plan on fishing several streams in both the SW and NE corners.

Paradise valley is a loooong way from the NE corner of the Park…..probably a two-hour drive one-way….longer if there is a bear jam.

Let me know what streams you want to fish and I’ll let you know what kind of driving will be required.

(Disclaimer….I’m no Yellowstone expert but I usually go backpacking and flyfishing there each summer. I can certainly tell you what mistakes I have made.)

She enjoys fishing alot and is actually excited about a float trip. We also plan to do a backpacking trip one day, but she doesn’t want to do that on our honeymoon and understandably so.

As far as the places that i want to fish, i would like to try the second meadow of slough in the ne corner and bechler in the sw corner. Now i know it’s a little early but hopefully they won’t be swollen over the banks. I really want to get into some cutts.

There are also a couple more reasons i figured on somewhere close to the nw corner. One, it’s close to livingston and bozeman where i can take her to eat and shopping if she chooses for a day or so. Second, we are planning on doing some hiking in the park and i know the sw corner has alot of waterfalls so i figured we would go hiking there.

Thanks for all your help, i really appreciate it.

If you want to stay in the Gardiner area, Parks Fly Shop: http://parksflyshop.com/ has a small cabin they rent and Richard Parks really knows YNP.

I’m not an expert, but I’ll share what I know.  June is probably going to be too early for Slough Creek and the rest of the northeast corner of the park (Lamar, Soda Butte, etc.).  That section of the park is usually the last to clear from runoff.  This year, it didn’t clear until mid-late July.  However, it a gorgeous area if you’re looking for somewhere to head for a hike.  The trail to Hellroaring Creek is pretty darn scenic with a very cool bridge crossing the Yellowstone.

Every year is different, but I’d be willing to bet those rivers won’t be clear by early June.  Blue Ribbon Flies is a good resource, they’ve always shown me very good customer service.  You might want to look into the Gibbon, and I would expect the Firehole and Madison to both still be fishing well then.  If you’re near the NW corner, the Gallatin will be close.  I’ve heard good things about the East Fork, but that was years ago and I’ve never checked it out for myself.  I’m sure you’ll have fun where ever you end up.

    Cheers,
    Tim
