I have been completely unable to catch gamefish outside of Tennessee on a fly rod.
Two trips to Pensacola, probably a total of 20 hours fishing – not even a strike.
One trip to Northern MI, 3 days of fishing for Salmon, Steelhead, Trout. My brother hooks 2 steelhead and a small rainbow on a 4 wt. I’m skunked.
Lando suggested a particular place on the South Fork of the Snake, and that’s where I went this morning. It was about a mile and a half walk each way, as I couldn’t find closer access. Once there, the river flows were high enough that I didn’t venture out far, but I was far enough out to take a small (9″) brown on a sparkleback pheasant tail!
A couple hours later on the bridge to Heise, I fooled another little brown.
No cutts as of yet. The Snake is REALLY hard to fish for a walker right now – flows are pretty high. I’m hopeful though. I saw at least a half dozen 18″+ fish by the Heise bridge, I just couldn’t get them to take. Maybe tomorrow night they’ll be hungry.
Thanks for the tip, Lando! You broke the curse!
