This past weekend, I was lucky to find some time to fish with my brother Jay. Good times and great waters were found as we scouted new rivers.

Early morning stalking smallies on the Nolichucky.

Nice stuff .. That Gar looks like it would be a blast!

Gar are fun – Kent Edmonds is a wizard at getting flies back, but I’d probably just slice through the fly and bring more rope.

Nice gar. I have been having my clients fish for them when out guiding, if they want to any ways. Yesterday we caught two that were over 3 feet.

Did you notice them taking it by slashing sideways, Travis?
Nolichucky looks like a very cool place – is any of it wadable or floatable in a non-powered boat?

Got several slashes by gar…I even had a few follow the fly into inches of water and make some nice splashes/wakes….it’s hard not to set the hook when they do that.

Zach, I could probably count the few times that I’ve fished the Nolichucky….it usually gets bypassed due to closer proximity of endless miles of the Forks and main trib Holston R’s nearby.

It’s a gorgeous rural river that starts out as a respectable whitewater destination in NC with several outfitter/rafting companies.  Afterwards, it meanders through fertile valleys of farmland in the foothills of the Appalachian mtns just east of the Smokies , and it confluences with the French Broad into Douglas Reservoir.  It is a WILD river, and it hides it’s larger fish with uncountable ledges and tumbling rapids. You usually have to catch numerous “schoolies” under 14″ to get big one, but I’ve known locals to get a few over 7lbs.
Best navigated by raft, but my canoe worked now, during the lower water season.
