MemberI am going to set a date for the IA SE Clave for the weekend of October 17th (Fri,Sat,Sun). Anyone interested? Location is to be decided but I like the idea of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I assume there will two options for meeting: 1) Meet in Atlanta as a central hub and carpool up together, 2) Meet up at the defined location on your own.
Since I have never been to the GSMNP I will defer to others about locations/lodging. Cabins or tents, both an option as far as I’m concerned but it might be best to share a few rooms in a cabin if possible.
Who: Anyone interested
What: IA Southeast Clave
When: October 17,18,19 (Fri-Sun)
Where: Great Smoky Mountains National Park (TBD)
Why: Why not . . . let’s get this party started.Aug 10, 2008 at 4:12 am #28237Brett Hoskins

Steve K.MemberIf you’re suggesting backpacking….I’m down with it.
We could meet at Fontana Marina and take the pontoon boat to Eagle or Hazel Creek and hike upstream a few miles. I think Zach mentioned something similar.

The Itinerant AnglerI have been checking on this, guys.

Steve K.MemberThrowing out another option(s):
There’s a campground near Fontana Village….don’t recall the name.
Also Fontana Village has hotel-type lodge and cabins.http://www.fontanavillage.com/accommodations/accommodations.htm
The dates mentioned will be prime “leaf peeper” season….meaning traffic and “No Vacancy” signs. The cabin/lodge prices drop by as much as 50% beginning Nov 1st.

MemberLikely to find the browns up the east side creeks out of Fontana that time of year.

MemberThe Cataloochee area, on the eastern side of the park, is beautiful, not quite as trafficked, there are five primary watersheds and their tributaries, elk, and a lot of history and historic structures for those who like to take breaks from fishing. I believe Drifter can attest to how nice it is.

Steve K.MemberTen-Four on Cataloochee. Beautiful place with a mix of big and small water. Lot’s of photo ops as well with restored buildings and of course the elk.
I’m not sure about lodging options other than the campground…..which is where I stayed. Basic amenities…no hot showers as I recall. There is a long drive (about 10 miles if I remember correctly) on a decent gravel road to get there. I mention that in case someone wants to stay in a hotel/cabin in Maggie Valley.
Lot’s of options.

MemberRegarding Cataloochee, the last couple times I tried going there during October I found no open sites (only 27 sites). The campground does not accept reservations, and the camp host told me that all sites typically fill up between 10 am and noon during peak season. I think there is a group campground in the area as well, but don’t know anybody who has ever stayed there. It may even be a horse camp for all I know. Beautiful area though, and that is getting into peak season for the elk rut as well. Brookies can be found there at relatively low elevations too.

MemberTravis,
Most of the campers I’ve met over the years are usually from Maggie Valley and Waynesville; they drive in on Friday mornings, setup camp, go to work, then return in the afternoon to spend the weekend. We typically beat the dash by arriving on TH afternoons. As for the group sites, I’m pretty sure it is only a matter of calling ahead. It is located past the Palmer Place (just before the turn over the bridge). There is a horse camp, too. It is located past Palmer Chapel (where the road turns left to the second meadow). I write this only to possibly help you out in the future.

Bob RigginsMemberHow far is the hiking and what is the terrain?

The Itinerant AnglerIn October it will probably be nymphs and streamers rather than dries, though we might see some midges.

MemberBob, if you make the trip after recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome I will personally carry you to the river to fish each day!!!

MemberDeep Creek is a drive up location, it flows right into Bryson City, might be able to camp right there at the bottom camp ground and do day hikes in to fish.
