Do any of you use the roll around luggage made by Simms Sage or Fishpond etc. I’m interested in what seems to work to carry a couple 4 piece rods boots and clothes etc. I’ve been using a old duffle roller but it has a metal internal frame and its heavy unloaded. I almost went over 50 lbs on my last trip.

    David,
While I like all of those companies, I would suggest getting a piece of Battenkill luggage from Orvis. It will be the same price, if not cheaper, and it is warrantied forever. I have some myself and do not have to worry about protecting it as it has the warranty. The cordura material seems to be much hardier than the rip-stop nylon on my Fishpond pacs. Plus, you gotta keep in mind that when at an airport, those handlers don’t exactly use “kid gloves” with our luggage.

I have this one from Orvis:

I just went to Yellowstone with my son and we packed 2 sets of waders, 2 sets of boots, belts, and a vest in the bottom compartment and 9 days worth of my clothes in the upper compartment (used those bags that you squeeze the air out of to compress the clothing to get more in).

I have the fishpond stampede 35″ rolling duffel and i can’t recommend it enough. The bag offers plenty of room for clothes and toiletries while offering a wet compartment on the bottom for waders, boots, etc. as well as places for rods. I own several of fishponds products, including the windwaker chest/backpack system and their quality is second to none.

I have a large Loomis rolling duffle with built in tubes on the sides.

If Loomis rods were as good as their bags i might own one.. 😉 😀

For luggage, old fashioned non-lightweight rugged materials like leather, real rubber, and canvas will always beat new back-pack style materials.

I have to agree with Zach.
In NZ and much of the South Pacific we have a 20KG limit (total!!) internally and a lot of the big rolling duffles weigh several Kilos empty. I have taken to using a duffle long enough to keep the rods in and will be getting a boat style bag I saw Zach using as carry on. Patagonia?
With a backpack I seem to have got by.

The next trip I am taking has a max limit of 15kg per person. Luckily its tropical

If weight is a really serious issue, a duffle will beat a roller hands down everytime. I weighed a couple rollers, they average around 10 lbs, duffles were 3-4 lbs.

You definitely add weight with wheels (more than you think).
If you are going to go the duffle route, you can’t beat a North Face basecamp duffle.  They are expensive, but they will last forever and the airlines baggage conveyor belts will explode before they eat those suckers.  The extra large can hold from 75-100 pounds of clothing and gear.  The built in backpack straps make it easy to carry.  You’ll have to be careful loading it because you will easily break the airlines weight restriction.

As an aside, keep in mind that there are a few airlines that are starting to charge $15 just to check your first bag.  Overweight bags will set you back another $50-75. Some airlines are instituting size restrictions on bags too not just weight.

Those two duffles with the shoulder straps are looking nice.

Best part about the Huey is that it only weighs just under 6 lbs empty, so you’ve got 44 pounds you can load in it before the US airlines start charging.
