InactiveOut of both boredom and interest I was reading reports from Yellowstone and just general info regarding the fishing in the surrounding areas.

MemberIn my experience I catch bigger fish, on average, than I do here in the east.

MemberI agree with Mike.
Just dont limit your trip out west because you’ll be driving 2,000 miles to catch trout the same size as your ones back home.

The Itinerant AnglerTrout size varies from miniscule to enormous in almost any good piece of water.

Inactiveyeah…I am not so much concerned about what “I” would catch or what “my” experience would be…just curious as to the “reality” of the fisheries and how they compare/contrast to each other.
Certainly big fish can be had here in the east…I have landed my fair share of GL steelhead and browns that go double digits…and have certainly seen the fish that the UD and other eastern tailwaters can provide.
If “fishing pressure” is a big difference I am curious as to the increase in pressure the west has seen over the last 5 to 10 years and if in fact that has affected overall size of fish.

John BennettMemberTim this won’t answer your question but interestingly enough this topic came up when a friend and I were fishing the Grand this past Friday.
We both are dieing to goto Montanna, so much so were very loosely thinking about doing it next year together. He’s been dieing to go and ive been dieing to go..so……In due coarse of the conversation turned somewhat naturally to “size” but in the sense that we here very likekly take for granted the number of 20+ Browns we have. I’ve read somewhere it has the most + kilometer or one of the highest. Rare is the day we go out and someone doesn’t get one or two 20+ fish. My firend whos so much more accomplished than I has had multi 20+ fish in a single day a few times. In about 6 outings this were we’ve probably caught a dozen 20 to 25inch fish. A few holes we fish hold quite a few, in fact most of, if not all the holes do throughout do. A trophy Brown for *me* would be 25 if not 27+. The point is we are very likely jaded.
A trip to Montanna for us would be about everything but catching large fish and we’ve both been wanting to do it for years.

chris zandoMemberI have been going out West for the past 4 years and have fished extensively in the Yellowstone area including the Snake, South Fork, Madison, Yellowstone, Various, Spring Creeks, Slough, etc. The experience of the West was life changing for me and I often dream of the crisp mornings. I have yet to fish the Missouri but have heard that is the “place”. I think the Henry’s Fork in its day may have been my dream stream.
However, from a pure fishing standpoint the Delaware system in NY that I call home have larger and much tougher wild fish!

Tim AngeliMemberThis is an interesting topic and I think it addresses a common misconception that there are bigger fish “out west.”

MemberI would also add that catching big trout also has a lot to do with the time of year you are fishing.

MemberHaving lived and fished in the West off and on for the last 40 years, it is really problematic to try and assess the Average Size of trout.
