First Essay for Publication?

I have written my first fly fishing essay, which I would like to submit to several magazines, in order to see if I can get it published.  As a result, I have a few questions.  I would be grateful for any input from those of you out there who have done this before.  

Once you have a manuscript you are ready to submit to magazines, do you send it to one magazine and wait for an acceptance or rejection before sending to another magazine?  Is it o.k. to send to several magazines at the same time?  What happens if you have sent your manuscript to multiple magazines and magazine A wants to buy the rights and then magazine B also wants the rights?  If a magazine states that they accept submissions through email and snail mail, is it better to submit to the editor via email or with a  paper copy through snail mail?  I assume you would also attach a cover letter.  Any other advice I should be aware of?

Thanks for the tips…very helpful!  I was actually writing the essay with Grays Sporting Journal and The Drake in mind.  Thanks for the suggestions of other magazines to consider as well.
