Got to meet Gierach at the Orvis flagship store in Manchester, VT over the weekend.  I had a great chat with him for the better part of an hour.  As more people showed up, he had a sort of round table where he talked about everything from traveling and writing to how fishing has changed in Colorado over the years.

I had a chance to get him to sign my first editions of Trout Bum and The View From Rat Lake.  It was funny, he said he didn’t keep many of the first printings of Trout Bum.  He laughed and said it had never occurred to him to do that at the time.  He was just happy that he got the book published.

One still shot (particularly with on-camera flash) isn’t often very flattering.

Check out this short video from over on Midcurrent:

Gierach looks and sounds quite “with it” there.

I ran into Gierach recently at a fly shop on the South Platte, a river he’s chronicled often during his career. He claimed to remember me from a newspaper interview I did with him many years ago at his cabin in Lyons, Colorado. Who am I to argue?

Later I watched him fishing and noticed that he waded with the aid of an old tree branch. No fancy wading sticks for JG!

Gierach is a very cool guy and, despite his entrance to geezerhood, he’s still pretty sporty with a fly rod in his hand. I showed him a pic of an 8-pound brown I caught on the South Platte last year and he seemed flabbergasted that it came from the river we were on.

Don’t know if he still brews up coffee streamside as he once did, but that’s the cover pic on his new book. Here’s hoping it sells well. Gierach is one of those authors who has actually improved over the years, as his prose becomes leaner and his wisdom deeper.

Does Orvis still have a store in Montpelier?  As a kid I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who was also crazy about fishing.. my first outfit was orvis.. I remember picking it out.. but I could swear it was Montpelier, but it could have been Manchester…  (Yep… I cut my teeth in VT)…

i lived in VT from 02-07 and didn’t see a store in Montpelier.
