Steve K.MemberMatt,
My favorite small stream rod is a 6′ 6″ Diamondglass fiberglass rod in a 3weight. Nice and slow and loads well with just a small amount of line.

MemberFiberglass is good too.

Cameron MortensonMemberMatt…I’d have to recommend fiberglass as well.

Steve K.MemberMatt,
I agree with you….with regard to small streams and bamboo. I’ve got a Mike Brooks 4 weight that is 7′ 6″ in length that goes with me to the Smokies quite a bit. Usually when I’m fishing the high altitude brookie stuff (we’re talking Smokies so wind isn’t much of a factor) I’m backpacking. I’m not quite as nervous about strapping the glass rod to the pack as I would be with the grass rod.
Either one is sweet when panning for brookies.

MemberA Payne 98 or a Payne 100 would be perfect for what you want, and more.

Thanks for all the great insight so far.

Mike McKeownMemberHaving fished my Scott Fibretouch quite a bit now, I have to put it in the mix… Original F 6’6″ 2w…
I also think the Payne Tappers are a dream, but I cannot vouch for a rod less than a 4w…

MemberI ask a similar question a while back but wanted a little stouter rod. I have a little Winston WT that fits your bill perfect and it is my favorite little rod – the LT is a little faster and I’m not sure that they make one that short – I think 7’9″ is as short as they go. The WT comes in a 2wt 7″ 2 piece (3 1/2 foot is not to bad to pack). Scott G2 is 2 wt 7’7″ and another sweet little rod – Its bigger brother is my daily rod.
I have ordered a McFarland glass rod by suggestion of some folks here and I am also working with a builder on a bamboo rod. BUT you’ll have to wait through this season to get one made. I also cast the diamondglass and really liked it but I need another rod like another hole in my head. My rods are starting to look more like a collection, so I need to stop for a while.

Mike McKeownMemberI have to agree, those old Winston’s are the bomb…
Don’t forget about the Sage 000wt, to 0wt… I have been fishing my 00wt for a couple of seasons now, and it is my go to stick… I can toss 14 bead heads with it, right the way to 26 dry’s, it is not a gimmick, they are serious fishing tools, I have landed a 19″ river run Bow, it gave me a good rev, but I never felt pressured… and everyone who throws it, now understands that it is a real fishing machine…
Kevin, you’re starting to sound like a tackle junkie, I like it… But why don’t you start putting a little away for a trip down here…
Decent Accommodation, dinner, bed, breakfast and lunch $50 per day, $12 rod fee, per day and I will guide you for free… 10 days fishing for $600, lets call it $1000, with my bar tab, and we are square, lets add $200 for transport, all in, with goodies to take back to the wife and kids, $1500, an I am probably 20% too high…
The big expense is getting here…
As I said to Zach the other day, anyone from this board want to plan a trip here for a bit of fishing and Safari…

MemberThe only two weight I own is a 6’9” Digger Degere bamboo. Actually my wife does and she likes it for small streams. By small, we’re talking a foot to 10 feet wide, and often with canopy. While I fish a couple of bamboo rods in shorter lengths, they are three weights and you asked about a two weight. For sure, they are nice. BUT, if I had to pick one rod for small streams, it would be a McFarland glass rod. I own a 7’, 3/1 three weight that is great for in close as well as up to 40 to 50 feet. It loads very well with a TT #3. The other advantage is it’s great for bushwhacking and very durable. Mike makes a great rod.

MemberI didnt think that I was a gear junky until I had to repurchase “everything” in one fail swoop. When you do that – you really realize what you have collected over the years. AND I REALIZED…. I had a collection. I have changed my insurance policy to reflect the value of these things.
Mike, A trip to the deep deep south sounds like a whole lot of fun. It will be a couple of years because Ginny and I have a newborn to think about. But we will be dragging her to all these destinations when time comes. I will take you up on the trip but I know it will be a little while before doing that sort of travel.
Rolf, I ordered the Mcfarland Spruce Creek – A small stream bomber 6′ – 5wt. He is renaming it the “Amelia June” after our new born daughter – instead of inscribing his usual Spruce Creek, he is putting Amelia June – My wife does not know this and it will be a great surprise to her. The rod is presentation grade with blued hardware, burled amboya reel seat, down locking screw lock with roping detail, an agate guide, a Scott G2 formed grip. I am excited about this rod because it is special to me for many reasons and it is going to be a beauty.
