The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
I believe, if I am counting right, that every flood gate in the White River system was open this morning.

MemberObviously this will have an imediate impact on the smallmouth fisheries, but at least there will be water there in August.

MemberI live in SW MO and I consider the White, Norfork, and especially Taneycomo my home waters. It is just incredible the amount of rain we have gotten in the last few weeks. Doesn’t seem like it is ever going to stop. There is a lot of concern on Taneycomo if more rain is received that the hatchery will possibly be flooded along with some other damage. Downstream they evacuated a lot of folks that live along upper Taney. Just hope no one gets hurt.
I too was told that there will be 24X7 generation for weeks to come. I was down at Taneycomo 2 weeks ago and the floodgates were opened and have been open constantly these last 2 weeks. No tailwater trout fishing in MO or Arkansas for me for several weeks (or months) :'( The entire whitewater system is still somewhat fishable by boat – but it’s really tough to wade and fly fish.

MemberWe are having the same problems here in OK, but not nearly as bad as the White system is having. All the same I don’t think I will be fishing for trout for at least month. Even our really nice tailwater that has a section you can always fish because there are two dams, with only the down stream one being used for generation, will be blown out for the foreseeable future. I usually take solace in the fact that I can always chase carp locally, but with all the rain all my stomping grounds are muddy as hell. Depressing.

MemberI spent much of the afternoon at Norfork dam. A zoo really. The Corps started preventing people from walking across the bridge there were so many sightseers. I managed a few photos (http://www.flyflinger.com/photos.php).
Beaver – All 7 flood gates open 4th time to higher 5-feet level on 4/10
Table Rock – Record flood gate releases 4/10
Norfork – Record flood gate releases (open 6-feet on 4/10) 82,000 cfs with 12 gates and both generators, about 23 feet stage.
Bull Shoals powerhouse started all 8 units 4/10. May have to open flood gates.
Greers Ferry flood pool also filling up.
White River cresting at Norfork around midnight 4/10 at just over 40 feet. What it is just below the confluence is hard to say–scary I guess.
Calico Rock expecting near record or new record river stage, perhaps three feet higher than in March. What comes next depends on rainfall.

Memberthis is the story for every Arkansas lake/tailwater, from the little mo, to the ouachita system, I think the little red has largely been spared so far but greers ferry is flooding bad, and as soon as they can I’m sure the COE will be running those generators.

MemberTo put this into prospective…
The Arkansas river that normally runs 35,000-50,000 cfs is predicted to hit over 400,000 cfs by this weekend.. THAT IS NOT A TYPO

Phil LandryMemberIf they open up even half of what they did on the Norfork on the Little Red the docks debris will be amazing.

The Itinerant AnglerIf I were the owner of a nice dock down there, I’d probably be constructing an “icebreaker” prow on the front of my dock as soon as possible.

Memberwasn’t there a major drought in the area last fall?
Apr 11, 2008 at 11:00 pm #24760
Phil LandryMemberNo this is not a good thing.
White River levels are supposed to get higher than the levels shown here that were just 3 weeks ago.
