Cameron MortensonMemberYesterday we enjoyed a grand day of powder at Copper Mountain. PoudreRiver, the wife, and I SHREDDED the Green Runs! HA…

This morning PoudreRiver and I headed over from Copper Mountain over to Silverthorne. We stopped in at Cutthroat Anglers, which is a fine shop with helpful staff, picked up a few flies, and got the low down on where we should start our morning. You know you’re in for a new fishing experience when you get directions like “Turn right at the 7-11 and follow that road down to the J-Crew parking lot. Park there and then walk over the bridge heading over to the Nike store. You’ll see fish there below the bridge.” We were fishing right in town…but that is where the fish are at. The Blue River is a tailwater…and the game is midges.

This brown trout started my day and took a size 24 black krytal flash midge.
Followed by this rainbow who took a size 24 red krystal flash midge. Flash in the fly seemd to work
Messing with the macro on this pretty rainbow trout.
It is a little unsettling to have every third person walking over the bridge ask you if you caught fish yet…or telling you that the BIG one is right here while they point somewhere just out of reach of a good cast.
PoudreRiver got in on the action as well with this spunky rainbow.
After a few hours we moved up river towards the I-70 bridge.
Nothing like high sticking through runs as a semi trucks and cars rush over the overpass above you.
I was using my eight foot five weight McFarland Spruce Creek fiberglass fly rod matched with a J. W. Young Pridex. This old school reel purrrrrs.
We found risers…but they weren’t easy. I caught one on a small back emerger with a flash wing. There were some big fish mixed in with the small ones here. It was neat to have “dry fly” fishing when it was only about 22 degrees outside.
And yes…with temps in the 20’s…the guides froze up all day.
PoudreRiver brought along his own way for us to stay warm inside. Think peaty amber…and wonderful.
About 14:00 we broke down the gear in the outlet mall parking lot.
Since we couldn’t (legally) keep sipping the flask while driving back to Copper Mountain…we stopped in for a $4.00 coffee and noticed that another snow storm was moving in. We’re skiing again tomorrow!Feb 26, 2008 at 11:50 am #23810Neal Osborn

Steve K.MemberWhile I’m slaving in the cubicle jungle on this Tuesday morning, looking at your photos….your catching trout!
That’s okay though….I’ll reciprocate this summer with some 25″ Kenai rainbows while you’re at work!
