Joel ThompsonMemberThanks for the heads up on the Yonder Mountain cd JT. I will have to pick that one up! I listen too a lot of Sam Bush, Alison Krause (and the solo stuff her band does), Blue Highway, and some Nickle Creek. I have Nickle Creek three times in concert and would recommend it to anyone!

MemberI am a bluegrass head. I saw YMSB at the Georgia Theater here in Athens, Georgia (USA) Feb. 14 and it was an incredible show. I can’t think of any band that has improved more over the last few years. 3 years ago they were decent. Now, I would rank them (almost) with their fellow Coloradoains Leftover Salmon for sheer virtuosity on strings. We’ve got a good up and coming band here called Packway Handle Band that have been getting pretty noteworthy in the last few years. They do a very trad single-mike type of music. In the long view I love all grass, but tend more toward the traditional stuff. Recently I’ve re-fallen in love with the Doc Watson Bill Monroe duets. That’s the complete package–picking and singing. Also, don’t forget Old Crow Medicine Show (as heard right here on some podcasts). I think they have some of the best writing and best harmonica licks in all the world of grass. I’m ambivalent about Alison Krause as a singer, but as a fiddle player with Union Station guitarist Dan Tyminski doing vocals=great stuff. They put on a good show. Ricky Skaggs has, of course, delved nastily into that awful genre called THNC (today’s hot new country), but don’t be fooled, he is probably the best living mandolin player and with his band Kentucky Thunder plays some of the tightest grass I have ever heard.

MemberSounds like we have a lot of bluegrass fans on here – for folks in the Northeast: you really ought to check out the Grey Fox bluegrass festival in NY.

MemberI don’t know all the musicians on the podcasts, but Old Crow Medicine Show is the music heard in the intro to most of them. I’m not picky about genre–OCMS is bluegrass to me, but maybe it’s really “old timey” music? Of the albums of theirs I have, I like Big Iron World best.
Try this site for various bluegrass and variants. It’s kind of a hippy/jam band site, but has plenty of bluegrass shows. The “bluegrass sessions” show has one of the best all-star lineups you’ll find–every one of these guys is world famous. Also listen to the Leftover Salmon stuff–not really bluegrass, but really well-played “cajun slam grass”. Do not neglect Peter Rowan and Tony Rice–best guitar picking you may ever hear. Also Yonder Mountain String Band is worth a whirl….
